Happy #primeweek! I just want to let y’all know that the Amazon shipping warehouse where my husband works is denying workers fans during a nationally recognized heat emergency and everything you order during time week places workers’ lives at risk.

This semester I’m going to tell my students I don’t care if they use ChatGPT to write their papers, much as I don’t care if they use LSD and a ouija board write their papers. I’ll give fancy-sounding bullshit a failing grade no matter how it’s produced.
Well this is grim

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

Those switching from the Tories to Labour or the LibDems strongly support the net zero climate target (73%). This compares to 61% of people overall who support Net Zero. Even 42% of Reform voters support climate action, despite Farage's grifting climate denial.
Election survey: what switching voters thought on climate as they…eciu.net Net zero policies supported by voters switching from Conservatives to Labour or the Liberal Democrats at the polls.

Why you absolutely can’t consider Reform an extension of the Conservatives and just add the two voting totals together. New polling from MiC shows barely a third would ever vote Conservative. Why the Tories are crazy for chasing the Reform vote.

Funny/sad to see the energy/climate community pretty much fail this collective action problem. If the core superposters all left X for the same new platform, then X would become an echo chamber for deniers/delayers and everyone the superposters want to reach - journos, pols, etc. - would follow.
I really can't begin to describe the despair and disappointment when my friends and fellow climate folks have justified keeping X alive through their presence because "that's where the audience is" like - that is true, but that is the exact reason you need to stop being the audience!

March 23 1933, the Enabling Act becomes law in Germany, giving the chief executive power enforce his own laws without checks and balances. The passing of the Act marked the formal transition from democratic republic to totalitarian dictatorship. 6 months later, it was a 1 party state.

Or we could get rid of the fucking guns.
“Chances are, you’re never ever going to have to use this. If you do, it’s gonna be scary,” trauma nurse Kate Carleton told the 8- and 9-year-olds. “But because we’ve taught you what to do, it makes it a little less scary.”
Born from the tragedy of gun violence, this program teaches children how to stop a wound from bleeding out | CNNwww.cnn.com “Stop the Bleed” turns bystanders — even young children — into immediate responders by teaching them to pack a wound and use a tourniquet.

Yes, this results in some terrible people being able to jump to a new service and start their whole terribleness over again with a new audience. That's a thing to be handled through community warning posts, not labeling. The two systems are not the same.

How much writable storage could you /physically/ carry as a school child? I, a nerdy kid, had a few floppy discs in my bag in the 90s, so maybe 8MB Read-only storage? a zipcase of CDs for my Discman (with skip protection!) - couple of GB at most. We learned information was hard won and valuable.
I don't think it's just the internet, though that's a big part. We saw cassettes replaced by CDs; VHS to DVD to BluRay. We've lived through half a dozen format wars. We've gone from hoping our parent's computer would be able to play the MP3s our friend put on a CD to streaming videos to our pockets.

Oh my god, this is fucking huge. It was huge when we developed a daily PrEP pill that could prevent you from catching HIV; this is a successful phase III trial of a PrEP shot that will only need to be given *twice a year*. Still needs a confirmatory Phase III, but holy fuck.
