When roads are dangerous for cyclists, only people willing to engage in risky behavior will ride on them. That sets norms for more risky behavior. When roads are safer for cyclists, they attract safer, more cautious cyclists, setting those norms. Safer roads lead to safer behavior.

Today a truck hit and killed a biker on 50th & 11th Ave. I don’t spend a lot of time fearing traffic. I love riding my bike. But this is why congestion pricing is personal to me. It will save lives. The more we let cars rule NYC, the higher the chance is that I don’t make it home one day.

Just to emphasize how immensely stupid and potentially wasteful this last minute decision was from Hochul, all of the congestion pricing infrastructure is in place. You can see it around midtown. This is work that was *already done & ready to go* that she’s trying to back out on.
"If congestion pricing is canceled as the governor plans, the [$507m] contract will need to be rescinded, cementing the MTA’s reputation as a nightmare client that nobody should want to work with unless they get paid in advance and with a risk premium." pedestrianobservations.com/2024/06/05/h...

I was living in London when congestion pricing came in and literally everyone loved it: Bus riders got faster rides, drivers spent less time in traffic, everyone else got more funding for transit. Wild that this unanimously popular policy is still 'controversial.'

In all the congestion pricing fury, I’m also just sad! NYC had the opportunity to be a leader and show what US cities could be if we didn’t bend everything to please drivers. I want cleaner air! I want reliable, accessible trains and busses! I want to not get hit on my bike in FiDi!

Hochul standing up for the struggling public middle school teacher who drives her BMW SUV from Darien to the Financial District every day and can't afford to pay a $15 congestion charge.
Prepping for a quick episode on the latest congestion pricing news and this bit from Governor Hochul's announcement is enraging. 99% of the people Hochul is talking about here — "teachers, first responders, small business workers, bodega owners — DO NOT DRIVE INTO MANHATTAN.

Legendary cowardice. The most NY Democratic Party move ever.
Breaking News: Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York halted a congestion pricing plan, which would charge motorists to enter Manhattan, just weeks before it was to go into effect.

call your state senator and assemblymember and demand that they protect congestion pricing. Hochul needs legislation to change the law that enacts the program. Albany will decide its fate. look up your reps and make your calls immediately www.nysenate.gov/find-my-sena... nyassembly.gov/mem/search/
We've gone from "congestion pricing will screw businesses and is just another tax on New Yorkers" to "Why don't we just tax businesses and screw New Yorkers instead?" It gives the game away: the controversy around congestion pricing has only ever been about opposition from suburban drivers.

Honestly, I can never keep Haidt and Chait straight, but they’re both anti-trans so I guess I couldn’t get it wrong here.

Don’t really know what anyone in government is thinking right now by creating the conditions that will merge an anti-genocide and anti-police violence movements into one larger movement. Seems like they’re not thinking through what happens next.

After the day in court, Trump headed to Harlem to do some campaigning. Per NYT reporter Michael Gold, as the pack of journalists, campaign staffers, and NYPD stood waiting for Trump, a woman passed by and shouted, "What are all these unseasoned french fries doing in my neighborhood??"

The joke would be to say that this administration's transportation policies are being dictated by a car, but in reality they're being dictated by Ingrid Lewis-Martin, someone who has admitted to never taking the subway. So basically it's a distinction without a difference.

“The school didn’t call an ambulance.” Some sentences enter the mind and will never leave. I read that in an article today and it will be with me for the rest of my days.
The story of Nex Benedict, the non-binary Native teen in Oklahoma who got murdered at school, is just so heartbreaking. The way the school reacted (they were going to suspend the teen): shocking. If your reactionary ideology turns you into an inhumane monster, re-evaluate the ideology.
