It's hard to communicate to a younger generation how cool stumbling on this show felt as a kid, especially because there was no real Internet yet that could help you contextualize or discuss it. Just an incredibly weird and cool show that felt like it shouldn't exist
I think there were some really rapid diminishing returns from the formula once it exploded with Adult Swim, but for my money the final pre-Adult Swim season of SGC2C and the first season of AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE are two of the best seasons of any TV show ever bsky.app/profile/rawk...
I am a soccer mom who quotes Aquateen at *least* once a week. Sometimes it's simple, like making cookies & I'm like "...BEHOLD!" other times it's a bit more, like saying in Carl's voice "I don't need no instructions to know how to ROCK". Either way, my kids hate it and my husband barely tolerates it
There's a one-off mothman character that appears in S1 of Aqua Teen that says "Oh my god" in such a specific way that I've said it in that cadence for 20 years
I think the first few seasons of ATHF and the entire run of Sealab 2021 were incredible.
I don't think the Sealab episode parodying The Legend of Bagger Vance can be parsed by most people though.
The first episode of "SeaLab 2021" I saw was the "Waking Quinn" episode and I saw it without having seen "Waking Life" or "Apocalypse Now" so it made NO SENSE but I was high as hell and having a religious experience.
Yeah those first few years of Adult Swim were like the first few years of Underground Comix. There was a real anything goes feel that could never have sustained itself.
It's wild that I have such clear memories of watching that but I do. I was 15, staying over at one of my friend's houses, and we stayed up all night to watch Cowboy Bebop.
The first season of Home Movies was a personal fave. SeaLab was a blast. I had the ATHF theme song as my ringtone back in the days before we all silenced our phones.
There was SO MUCH MORE of it than just SGC2C, too! Cartoon Planet was like a whole extra giant block of it without the interviews but with more Brak. And then there were the albums and all the interstitials they ran! It was a massive ecosystem
Comb those used CD stores & online marketplaces, folks. These albums are pure Rhino Records magic.
