the problem, more often than we realize, is simply that they don’t believe anyone could really be that cartoonishly evil, and they’re looking around for any excuse to avoid confronting that as reality. “they can’t legally do that”, “that’s an extreme example”, “biased sources”, “misspoke,” etc

part of why I want to push back against full Doomerism is that last month it looked like the EU was going to be plunged into a fascist revival and mass torment of immigrants was unavoidable. Now we have the UK stopping their foreign concentration camp idea and France knee capping the right.

In France, the left coalition comes in first, Macron second, the far-right third. The best way to defeat fascism is not centrism, it’s a strong left.

Long election campaigns also put the emphasis, over and over again, ON THE ELECTION rather than on governing: like voting is all we as citizens have to do; like winning is the most important quality in a candidate. GOVERNING. The thing is GOVERNING. Elections should be a means of accountability+

Long elections waste immense amounts of money. they harass potential voters into apathy. They play into the horse-race, scandal-fed view of politics that feeds deeply unserious media coverage. They NOT INCIDENTALLY make it difficult/impossible for campaigns to deal with last-minute surprises.
