He made a career out of trashing the people he grew up around (home town and his grandparents town). I just don’t get how anyone thinks this will work out well for him on the national stage.
Eating in an Ohio restaurant and the local TV station did a piece with people in Vance’s hometown. First of all, loved the shot of the upscale coffee shot, the chic farmer’s market etc and the comments from the Chamber of Commerce CEO. Second, they seemed pretty damn unenthused

This seems like a grim natural experiment to show that access to mental health services isn't going to neutralize access to guns when it comes to controlling violence

Since it's Olympic season, my analogy for doomsayers like Schiff are people who look at the heat sheet before a swimming or running race and conclude someone with a marginally slower seed time from like four months before the race has no chance to win so that lower seed might as well just give up

It sounds too simple (and like an exaggeration) when you say that it's game over for Ukraine and the Palestinians of Gaza if Trump/Vance win, but it's pretty much that simple. You might be tempted to say things can't get worse. But the bad news from history is that they almost always can.

This news is incredible. 100 days this year CA's used 100% renewables to power the entire grid, & through a heat wave, there's been no significant disruption (cough *Texas*). Energy analysts are seeing a "phase-change" of the grid with the addition of 5 nuclear plants worth of battery storage, wow
"No rolling blackouts or grid emergencies as California continues on path to a carbon free grid. Several strategies, including upgrades to vulnerable parts of the grid at play here, but key enabler is more clean energy, especially solar, and above all, battery storage..." 😀

I can’t find a live link to it yet, but the Biden campaign ad of videos of a beardless JD Vance disavowing Trump and saying he voted Hillary is brutal.

I'm a big fan of the attitudinal model of law, but I also think it's possible for judges not to be total partisan hacks. The thing is, literally no institution could survive if its leaders were taking bribes and its major positions were purposely filled with irresponsible lunatics for decades.

WSJ this morning. lol at the last bit. "Leaders on both sides need to stop describing the stakes of the election in apocalyptic terms. Democracy won't end if one or the other candidate is elected. Fascism is not aborning if Mr. Trump wins, unless you have little faith in American institutions."

Poli sci reminders: -VPs rarely matter electorally. The main reason the pick matters is Vance is now (a) likely to be the next GOP nominee and (b) the potential successor to a 78-year-old man. -Conventions matter a lot www.cjr.org/united_state... - we don't know if or how that changes after Saturday

Because of the timing with respect to the Republican National Convention, we will likely never know the effect of the attempted assassination of former President Trump on the state of the presidential race, at least separate from the joint effect with the convention.

In the Chicago Tribune, I argue that given Trump and Heritage's history, the personnel involved and the lack of details in the GOP platform, Project 2025 is the best available preview of what Donald Trump would do if elected. His denials ring false. www.chicagotribune.com/2024/07/15/o...

Because we’re talking about political violence it’s worth noting that research tells us that exclusion drives violence and inclusion prevents it. Exclusion both creates narratives that justify violence for the dominant group and convinces marginalized groups that violence is their only option.
So far this is basically the trans-bashing convention and (1) it's disgusting, and (2) I'm really not sure it's what normal people want to hear from a political party. Also if any neutral media type really care about "lowering the temperature" they should start note the hate speech in Milwaukee.

I also want to point out that Vance's whole "professors are the enemy" schtick came after he profited enormously from universities. Nowhere was "Hillbilly Elegy" pushed more than on college campuses. He cashed in with six figure speaking fees to talk about Appalachian poverty.
