In August 2016, Trump gave a speech in Wilmington, NC that led some reporters, including Nick Corasaniti and Maggie Haberman of the New York Times, to wonder whether he was "inciting gun owners to use their weapons against judges or a sitting president."

it's incredible the extent to which so many ideas about how voters will react to things in the electoral world tacitly assume that voters are white men.

Had to go to a big-box store and its garden center had all the sprinklers on. And the sales folk didn't ask me to leave. Had to wipe my eyeglasses to see where I parked my car.

"Those who claim calling Trump a threat to democracy is violent rhetoric are doing a kind of rhetorical violence to democracy, screeching it to a halt, making of an ever-moving idea a static one, writing a banal and brutal ending onto a story that’s meant to keep going."

So that whole bowling alone fixation when I was in grad school inspired this piece in gender & society. Would have loved to have added that little tidbit 20 years ago (I can’t believe I’m that old)

I’m an actual pacifist. I want all guns banned. I just need the left to do less “violence is bad even when it happens to Trump” and more “this is the world Trump wants the rest of us to live in.”

Artist Don Drumm on the bullet hole in his sculpture, "Solar Totem #1": “I have let it be known to different people that I do not want that hole ever welded closed.” The bullet hole was created when guns were fired against anti-war protestors at Kent State University on May 4, 1970.

“If you lose the curators, you’re not going to have the people who really know those collections and what they mean,” Kirch says. “You become just a warehouse of the world’s specimens.”
Wow. "four out of 16 curators lost their jobs. Three other staff members in the division took voluntary buyouts, including the manager of the fish collection—one of the largest in the world.... One of the laid off curators had an endowed position"

What I take away from this is no one should have unlimited power and also we need to bring back "superadd."
“Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or the certainty of corruption by authority.” -Lord Acton, 1887

Degenerative AI
Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.
