i hold few left tendencies in more contempt than anprims. industry and human ingenuity gave us the CASE axial-flow combine and 45 foot grain header for a reason.

The point is to channel the hugely productive power of capitalism in fundamentally constructive ways, not to let civilization go to seed

I think the recent Contrapoints “Tanget” for patrons on Granola Fascism really captures what you are describing above better than any reductionist horseshoe theory bullshit ever could.

ill be honest with you im never gonna look that up to find out if you're right or not

Which part is the hurdle, out of genuine curiosity.

Fair. I enjoy certain content creators (gagging noises) but I rarely allow the algorithm to recommend anything/anyone new. As someone who went to school in Humboldt County, seeing a video contextualize so many of the seemingly incongruous beliefs found among that part of the “left” was great.

god my friend explained how an axial-flow combine worked a while back and i was just kicking the floor and yelling for an hour mostly i get Like This about large-scale chemical processes and everything Norman Borlaug ever did but it's all connected anyways aaaaaaaaa

I stg you're both just making up words

i have GREAT news for you about your next wikipedia dive

When something is flowing axially, what's it not doing. Lateral flow? Radial flow? Normal flow?
Avatar
Avatar
i'm a fucking poser and don't actually know how the older kind of combine harvester *actually* works offhand - 'axial flow' because the threshing action is done by passing the grain through a bigass cylindrical rotor, which is way the shit faster/higher bandwidth than... whatever we used before that
Avatar
before IH came up with the big drum that gives the case-ih axial-flow its name there were a bunch of designs that used basically a series of "walking" sieves or shaker plates

In terms of electric motors it's radial and axial, but I think radial flow combine would look something like an oil tanker, but with the tank up front?

Looking at a combine harvester like peasants in an Eisenstein movie

Anprims got me permabanned on twitter one time for telling one of them to "go choke on a salad" and I have held a grudge ever since.

anprims are just libertarians who like camping too much

Look, the history of timekeeping/watches/clocks, it attracts real oddballs. But if even *we* can turn around and laugh at a scene for being out of touch, and missing the point, primitivists are Down Bad.

Yet another group of people who do not have sufficient history (prehistory?) education. The past was the worst. Nowadays all but the most destitute and isolated of us survive diseases that would have killed kings just over 100 years ago. Also hilarious to think that anprims post on the internet.

I'd still keep some skillsets alive: gardening, weaving/sewing, carpentry, metalwork

as a fiber arts lover, i feel like the ability to make yarn / string / rope is very underrated when we talk about civilization-enabling developments in early hominid history. like just being able to tie things together and carry them around from place to place more easily is huge!
Avatar
also, having made fabric myself and knowing how much labor goes into that has made me even more opposed to fast fashion. when i launch my art / surface pattern career i’m intentionally going to avoid designing for textiles even though i love them so much. we already have so much fabric on this 🌎.

A very difficult choice, but your designs will be amazing, I am certain.

My DH once had to lead me away from a quilt exhibit at a historical site because he said I was scaring the little kid who asked 'But why would people *bother* cutting up old rags just to sew them together again?' (Just the utility argument, not even 'desperate for something pretty' sidebar... )
Avatar
haha i hear you.... because if you have to set up a loom to weave cloth with 8-40+ ends per inch, or else not have cloth, you're going to wring every last bit of life out of what you've made.

I took a knitting class and that clearly piqued my curiosity into making my own yarn. Amazing work. Addictive.

it’s the slipperiest slope. first you’re crocheting then you want to blend, spin, weave, and even felt too.

All those pretty colors and textures.

I wouldn't be able to tell you why they're ideologically incompatible with Völkisch blut-und-boden fascism or modern ecofascism, because I don't think they are.

I think they're the anarchist equivalent of red-brownism tbh; they very easily slide into eco-fascist or adjacent positions.

I tried this in Google translate and got nothing... I have no clue what is being discussed, might be because of my age.
