Government agency librarian in Columbus, Ohio. Old and still liberal AF. I drink bourbon, I have 3 library cards, I protect people’s right to information, and if you don’t like that you are still welcome in the library.

Allow me to reiterate
I live in Ohio and in the US and apparently JD. Vance learned no history in his years of elite education at Yale. I learned how immigrants made the US in my public school classrooms.

There is never any shame in using the library, and much benefit in doing so. They are the closest thing to an unmitigated social good that we have in these United States, which is why the hard right is gunning so fervently for them these days. A world without libraries and librarians is a poor one.
My book-buying budget is not what it once was, which is precisely why I’m using the library more. It also gives me the opportunity to read books that I’m not sure I want to add to the home library (not that there’s a lot of room to do that anyway).

I oppose this worldview—this theory of America—with every fiber of my being.

Well that was fun. @scalzi.com is such an extrovert and so funny. The whole panel at the Columbus Book Festival was amazing!

Amy Madigan’s speech 35 yrs ago about censorship and book burning in Field of Dreams is still spot on.

If you think your employers will take action to keep you safe at work without OSHA regulations you are wrong. If you think they won’t try to remove Workers’ Compensation rules too you are wrong. You will be on your own if you get hurt.

What the hell is wrong with people. Allow your safety librarian to remind you. “NEVER EVER BYPASS SAFETY SYSTEMS”.

I’ll bet very few people outside my 3-person library staff know that we have an archive of Workers’ Compensation History in Ohio at the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation dating back to 1913. We are slowly working through cataloging all this amazing history.

“Satan is in Libraries” Well if he can provide photo ID with his current address then he is entitled to sign up for a library card. We also have other ways he can sign up if he is currently without identification

this is the funniest thing happening on the internet today: people claiming the newly elected president of Mexico isn’t really Jewish because she thanked Jesus (she thanked Jesús, her husband)

I salute E. Jean Carroll and Stormy Daniels for being braver than all three branches of our government.

Lovely gentle mini documentary about artisan soft pastels made in the old way. You don't see much coverage of this underappreciated medium in the mainstream, so I enjoyed it a lot. youtu.be/Eu6po8_sPco
How This 300-Year-Old Pastel Stick Maker Creates Nearly 2,000 Colors — More Than Its Competitorsyoutu.be Henri Roché pastels are highly coveted for their particular texture, ability to adhere to most mediums, and intensity of colors. For over 300 years, La Maison du Pastel has handcrafted these pastels, used by artists like Degas and Monet. Today, the company is run and operated by just two women — Isabelle Roché, a distant relative of Henri Roché, and Margaret Zayer. But it's taken them decades of work since Isabelle took over the dying company in 2000 to build it back up to where it is today. We visited their secret workshop in the French countryside to see how La Maison du Pastel is still standing. (Thread) In 2014 I moved from Borneo to Scotland and ended up in a house on the edge of the Highlands in a small country community. Within 20 minutes of arriving we were greeted by our 75 year old neighbour Barbara with a thermos of tea, two china cups and the genteel bellow "DO YOU RIDE?" (1)

Lots of Kent State news popping up and I’m worried some people might not remember that about a week later, Miss. police fired guns indiscriminately into a Jackson State dormitory, murdering two students and injuring 11 others. It was overshadowed by Kent b/c Jackson was a Black research university.
