The thing that's obvious to everyone and that nobody can actually write in the press is that the American (and yes, I'm sure elsewhere too) right wing is led by bad people and the object is to make more people extremely bad in basically every respect. It's anti-society

not a day goes by that i don't spend time thinking about the "My husband says i have 'boy pussy.'" post on r/advice where this woman was having sex with her husband and then he just randomly says "yeah that boy pussy," and then she goes straight to reddit instead of talking to him about it at all

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

Take this for what you will, but while the elite commentariat is melting down about biden literally the only thing I've heard about the debate in the real world is people at the bar making fun of trump's "black jobs" line
Avatar
another fun one is how virtually no one mentioned Trump's "black jobs" comment that he said on live television lol
Wait, why am I just now learning about this?

Project 2025 itself should be a big I ongoing story, and the Trump bigwigs lying about having nothing to do with it should be a big story on top of that. Instead the media is gonna accept the disavowal at face value and write another story about Biden being old.
Stephen Miller now following Trump's lead and saying he has nothing to do with Project 2025. 1. His organization is on the Project 2025 advisory board. 2. He recorded a video as part of Project 2025 training tools 3. You can see Mandate for Leadership, the Project 2025 publication in the background

very hard to figure out what this use of DEI could mean other than the n word
Subtle. Very subtle.

Someday perhaps we'll have a national conversation about how the ranks of media moguls and political reporters covering the first woman to win a major-party nomination were filled with virulent misogynists and sex pests. (Moonves, Murdoch, Lauer, Thrush, etc. etc.)

It’s more complex than this but: 1% response rates force pollsters to infer; the responses they get may reflect only trends within the set {will take a phone poll} This is why polls are broken: inferences can’t scale down this far. If you want to know what’s gonna happen in Nov, go make it happen.
13/ To put some numbers to this, polling prior to 2008 had extremely high response rates, and pollsters were flipping their shit that in 2008 their response rate, P(R), was down to 30%. Many polls we're seeing now have P(R) down under 1%. The real analysis is more complex, but this is the idea.

"Joe Biden is a zero on infrastructure" is a "Stephen Curry isn't a good shooter" level take, I cannot believe someone actually threw that out there
Avatar
12/ To conclude, this is why having response rates in the gutter is a problem. The lower the response rate, the more important any asymmetry in the response rate affects your measurement, confusing the thing you're trying to infer. Since you can't measure the asymmetry, you're just kinda hosed.
In apropo of a thread with iirc @proptermalone.bsky.social about the crosstabs in low-response-rate phone polls, here's a semi-quantitative analysis of why I'm a little dubious about poll results with a >1% response rate. It comes down to Bayes' theorem P(A|B) = P(B|A) P(A) / P(B)
Avatar
Thank you. This has been tickling my intuition but I haven't had time/energy to walk through the math

Biden is not owed good press by a long shot. But the amount of coverage his age is receiving relative to that of Trump's very real past and promised future actions strikes me as one of the greatest media mis-prioritizations since the run-up to the Iraq War.

When every single national media outlet is speaking in lockstep with Republican talking points about a candidate for president, that is a fundamental, societal level problem with bad implications for the future of democracy in the US. That people discount that is deeply disappointing.
I focus 90% of my criticism on media ethics and leadership because that is the foundation of how we establish a shared reality. Writing off media effects as immaterial or irrelevant, as if people form opinions about events outside their personal experience without mediation, is deeply ignorant.

This is so embarrassing. This election will wind up as an ethics lesson in every journalism 201 class right next to the Iraq War and the way people like Jake Tapper covered Monica Lewinsky

Always worth remembering who isn’t getting 17 front page stories per day highlighting every gaffe and demanding he step down. Just so we’re clear on who is being told they are unfit and who is not.
This was a speech during which he did not have to answer any questions, he supposedly knew where he was going to be several days ahead of time, and this is what he came up with

This is called agenda setting and it’s a crucial media function elites in the media only very inconsistently admit they do for rather venal reasons.
“As media we consistently proclaim that we are just reporting the news when in fact we are driving it. What we cover, how we cover it, determines often what Americans think is important and how they perceive these issues yet we keep pretending it’s not so.” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Why is the pundit class so desparate to push Biden out of the race? | Rebecca Solnitwww.theguardian.com Yes, Biden had a bad debate – but so did Trump. The media is once again repeating the mistakes of 2016
