So much time and energy was wasted on “free speech absolutism” when it was always a feint to make racism socially acceptable again.

The EPA ordered the Air Force to clean up PFAS-polluted drinking water to Tucson, AZ. The AF has refused, citing the SCOTUS Chevron decision that curtailed the EPA’s rule-making authority. Now they’re at an impasse because the fed government can’t sue itself and Chevron doesn’t curtail enforcement.

This is so fucked. You can’t just let deep pocketed fascists win like this. It just encourages more of the same. “While the WFA denied that GARM’s work had run afoul of the law, it said that the nonprofit did not have the financial resources to continue operating while it fights X in court.”

A few years ago, amid a flurry of sexual harassment allegations in comics, I wrote about patronage networks, sexual abuse, and the wreckage that Big Names leave behind and that companies gloss over. It's not about Neil Gaiman, who I didn't know about at the time. But it also...kind of is.
Inside the Comic Book Industry’s Sexual Misconduct Crisis—and the Ugly, Exploitative History That Got It Herewww.thedailybeast.com The storm of allegations against writers including Warren Ellis and Jason Latour is not a sign that the comics industry is broken. It’s a sign it’s running precisely as designed.

This is one of the most effective ways to work on climate change: elect a better public service commission to regulate your utilities. (if you can, get your commission to be credentialed (and either appointed or elected) rather than just elected) then, yell at your commission at hearings!
Live in Arizona? The commissioners are elected, 3/5 seats are up. Get out the vote.

In case you've never seen a bitcoin mine. Each of those buildings is packed with fan-cooled processors, generating purely digital wealth at the expense of the Texas electrical grid and all the residents and wildlife in earshot. I hope the civil lawsuits are legendary and financially devastating.
A public health crisis ensued when a Bitcoin mine moved into a small Texas town. In today's episode, we visit Granbury, where the mine's cooling fans are so loud they rattle windows, and residents have migraines and hearing loss. Listen here 🎧: pod.link/73329284

You know how people are worried about foreign investors buying up US farmland? There's a company that helps them do that! It's like Uber for buying US farmland. And who's one of its key investors, profiting off of every sale? J.D. Vance. www.businesswire.com/news/home/20...

It's an anti-democratic disgrace that the NYC Mayor's office does not have a way for you to call on the phone to voice your critique of the Mayor's actions or policies. They just shunt you to 311, which is not designed for that. It was like that under de Blasio, too. Trash.

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

It's not weird, doomerism is the single most effective disinfo campaign against the youth and the non-youth left, because that's attacking their greatest strengths, their hope and idealism

If you're going to call a Senator who is not your Senator, call the Senate Majority Leader's office. Schumer's phone number is (202) 224-6542
Another thing you can do is call Dick Durbin's office and demand he stand up for democracy and haul Alito and Thomas before the Senate Judiciary Committee. And publicly demand their resignations. If you can't literally impeach them, AT LEAST use the bully pulpit. 202-224-2152.

I just called both Schumer and Gillibrand and told them both that Hochul's refusal to obey rule of law and implement congestion pricing is a constitutional crisis that discredits the whole Democratic party. You should call too. Schumer: 202-224-6542 Gillibrand: 202-224-4451
I called Senator Schumer and told him exactly this, in nearly these words. The fight is not just about congestion pricing. It's about the importance of democracy itself, and whether Democrats value democratic rule of law. ☎️ (202) 224-6542 ☎️ (212) 486-4430 @thewaroncars.bsky.social

Google has tried for years to push their Nest product into poor people’s homes through public service commissions and with paid advertisements masquerading as white papers. Now it’s going to monetize everyone’s faces and you might never know your own face has been sent in and uploaded for it.
The name I have for people who do this is “former friends.” “…Google Nest and SimpliSafe are using face scan technology that allows users to create a face contact list for friends and family, using pictures you already have. That data then gets used in video doorbells and home cameras.”

Mask bans are strategies of oppression. The bans will first harm disabled, queer, and BIPOC communities. But it’ll cost the rest of you your health and freedom eventually. Disability justice is for everyone; we either die young or live long enough to become disabled. Resist the bans. Wear an n95.
I was nervous to write this bc I know all the outlets I called out have a lot more resources than me; however, I’m simply tired of watching journalists bill themselves as leftists while they silently watch us die. Enough. t.co/5Y4qsQ6B4p

unfuckingbelievable. Hochul is proposing banning masks on subway trains, which are often poorly ventilated and jammed full of people. This is sheer fucking insanity.

UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks. This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.

Me in December when SCOTUS took the abortion pill case:
The Supreme Court took another abortion case, but the real threat is the media narrative. SCOTUS will likely swat the sham lawsuit away on standing grounds, earning it headlines about “protecting abortion.” But it won’t change the fact that a GOP president could still enact a national ban in 2025
Abortion Access Will, Once Again, Be Decided by the Supreme Courtjezebel.com Experts think SCOTUS will rule against a challenge to mifepristone—which could trick voters into believing they “protected abortion” in a crucial election year.

absolutely this. republicans thrive on decline! republican policies bring economic decline which brings outmigration of young people and professionals, which strengthens the republican hold on government which brings even more conservative policies which brings greater decline, etc.
People are like "why would these supposedly pro business Republicans be cutting funding for public universities that are huge economic growth engines" and like look at how the richest states vote and how the poorest states vote. If you were a Republican would you want your state to become wealthier?

starting to wonder if congestion pricing was paused because the NYPD cops who commute from long island threatened a revolt and eric adams was like kathy, we can't have that
I'm still marveling at the political calculation from Albany Democrats that we shouldn't toll the small number of suburban drivers into the city so, to make up the $1 billion a year in funding that would have taken in, we'll tax everyone who works in Manhattan. [chef's kiss emoji]
