My wife's uncle is one of the kindest, most selfless people I know and is probably a Trump supporter. I've spent a lot of time trying to reconcile that in my mind.

I think a lot of people replace a true idea with a nearby but entirely false idea when discussing positive social media impact: (True) There are a variety of problems that cannot be solved by a lot of people online agreeing it's a problem. (False) Social media can't really change anything important.

This is the editorial view of the guy who controls which posts get shown on Vichy Twitter and which get buried. Insane that journalists continue to use it as a source of information and contribute to its legitimacy

Anyone have a great analysis of how/why the politics of the UK changed so dramatically?

FWIW, this reminds me a lot of when de Blasio and Bratton discussed getting rid of the Times Square plazas because of what they perceived as general chaos. Returning the area to cars, they believed, would restore order. It's a cop's view of the world where order is more important than safety.
Law & Orderbrooklynspoke.com You may have seen a rather strange piece by Douglas Feiden from West Side Spirit making the rounds over the past few days. Called "Disrupting the Grid," it's a throwback to some of the more ridiculous...

I get the *idea* that maybe it's best to stick with Biden, ride or die. But it makes me angry when people minimize what happened at the debate or patronize people who were alarmed by it as "freaking out".

You don't have to write "timeline cleanse" to post something enjoyable

A lotta folks are trying to shut down the conversation about a replacement nominee. I've got news for ya, the conversation is not shut downable. That thinking is even more wishful than him stepping aside.

Things are pretty fucked up and the future is uncertain — probably the worst in my lifetime (perhaps excepting 1969 before I can remember). When it’s like that, I like to think about my grandparents and what they faced and got through with the Great Depression and WWII. /1

Pretty chilling. But that also means we're currently only 2 heartbeats away from a Mike Johnson presidency.
4/ Add in the fact that Harris would be the first woman president and only second president of color and it gets scarier. Add in that her replacement would be from the other party and it starts to look like an invitation to assassination attempts.

Hey, so maybe Joe Biden doesn't step aside. I'd love to have a theory of his campaign's plan to win more voters. Or are we just going to play it down the middle and hope for the best?

Isn't it interesting that they're trying to frame themselves as initiating *that* war instead of the Civil War? Wannabe Confederates still don't like being called what they are. Probably because it reminds them they lost the first time.

Fascinating to me that people think switching candidates would make the Dems look weak, as though we look so strong right now.

Now's probably a good time to start protesting. You know, while we still can.

They're laying the groundwork for when the first anti-Trump demonstrations happen in early 2025 and Trump orders the military to shoot protestors. Plus, the Supreme Court has now said that's okay because it will be an official act as president! We crossed the rubicon some time ago, but this is bad.

No matter what, the Biden campaign has every reason to get Kamala Harris out there and showcase her in the best possible light. For Biden to stay in an win they need Americans to be comfortable with her taking over should he not survive his full term. This is a crucial task post-debate.

This is what I learned visiting Cuba. You get there, and you don't see oppression and the presence of the police state. Illicit behavior is seemingly tolerated. But the crackdowns are arbitrary and dramatic. Also, there's a whole social apparatus that enforces the regime at local levels.
life under authoritarian regimes is like war: most Americans don’t know that it’s often really normal and boring, up until the rarer, horrible moments when it isn’t

No shame in feeling scared, overwhelmed and not knowing what to do. To me feeling one's feelings doesn't preclude taking action. These are confusing times. Give yourself some grace.

I want everyone to think about what Trump will do with explicit absolute immunity from prosecution and the full power of the presidency of the United States of America those are the stakes in November, full stop
look i'll be clear, I will be voting, and encouraging everyone I know to do the same, against donald trump and the end of democracy in this country in november. I do not care if that means i'm voting for a man who is literally dead.

I know this is controversial but I think people should be allowed to feel their feelings about the state of things because for many people this is the first real day 1 in their understanding of where we are and how bad it is and brigading each other is counterproductive

In a lot of ways the entire Republican establishment since the 70s has been dedicated to making sure that what happened to Nixon would never be allowed to happen to one of theirs again
