The best kind of twist is one that hits you hard in the moment but in retrospect was inevitable. The final sentence here is a great example of the form.
Apologies in advance for what might look like a rambling diatribe going nowhere. But the one thing I know really well - better than almost anyone else - is boxing. And there’s a really valuable lesson from boxing that the Democratic Party needs to learn in a hurry.
Let’s start with the boxing bit.
Okay, so what does any of this have to do with politics?
Well, the Republican Party has very much become the Mike Tyson of politics. They are always on the attack. (And they are full of rapists, batterers, and guys who have gone bankrupt dozens of times, but I digress).
Now, look, standing toe to toe with a prime Tyson is easier said than done. There are only a handful of guys with the guts and chin required. But that was the only way you disarmed the weapon of mass destruction. And the important thing was that Tyson was no longer fierce going backwards.
A very famous person is going to die, and that will make the world weep, for about a minute. A calamity will come to pass. And a new day will be on the horizon.
What if I told you “investigating it as domestic terrorism” doesn’t mean anything at all, but is a null-phrase calculated to mean “we take this seriously” without being specific, kind of like “person of interest”
