Oh hey tech firms what’s up, I found the miracle solution: throw this unwanted AI shit into the fucking trash where it belongs

This story is horrifying on multiple levels. (1) It very likely cost lives in Philippines and around the world, including here in the US due to diminished trust in vaccines. (2) When democratic govs employ this kind of info operation, they undermine the values and trust that sustain democracies.

seems like a buried lede here that all of the news we've seen about how bad the cybertruck is has a denominator of less than 4,000
Tesla is recalling all 3,878 Cybertrucks that it has shipped to date, due to a problem where the accelerator pedal can get stuck, putting drivers at risk of a crash

Just a simple point about the power and longevity of disinformation. The KGB cooked up the "America invented AIDS" conspiracy theory in 1983, the same year Rodgers was born. And 40 years later, Rodgers is still parroting it. thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/operation-de...

On the one hand, hard not to agree with the sentiment. On the other hand, the irony of this article being behind a paywall…

sometimes I think about how in like two years there’s gonna be a ton of award-winning journalism about all the lives that have been ravaged by sports gambling and all the companies that knew and kept going and nothing will change because we’ve stopped trying to make things better in this country

Man, the disconnect between these quotes. Tenant advocates: “This bill will require landlords to actually complete repairs.” The apartment association: requiring landlords to meet minimum habitability standards in 7 days = “drastic and impractical changes.” coloradosun.com/2024/04/10/w...

Gotten worse over time. In 2017, 33 pp more Americans believed their own financial wellbeing was "good or excellent" than believed the national economy was. By 2021, gap grew to 54 pp, per Fed Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2021.Same for local vs national.

Some good news. A consortium of Colorado newsrooms — many of which compete with each other — are teaming up to switch their election coverage over to the "citizens agenda" model, according to Colorado Public Radio. www.cpr.org/2024/04/02/v... I will share more about this when I get more details.

The AI stuff is making me go slightly more insane each day. Why is any of this happening? How did all this get off the ground so quickly? With seemingly no meaningful resistance from anyone. Nobody saying, "well, hold on here, let's at least test this out for a good while."

"The boost... is directly tied to a marked increase in state support for higher ed... The...most impactful focus of that expenditure is a new financial aid initiative...students from families making less than $80,000 a year will receive free tuition"
The article is here and focuses on tuition, bc MN is doing amazing things with public uni tuition. But Tressie's article makes me think about other issues too. Gun control, repressing speech. Are MN schools advertising on this? Come to MN: free speech, health care, low tuition, fewer campus guns.
Enrollment up at MN colleges after “historic” state fundingwww.insidehighered.com Enrollment at public colleges rose for the first time in a decade. Higher ed leaders credit historic state funding and innovative college access initiatives.

This helps explain why Trump’s average polling miss relative to 538 averages was bigger in open primary states than semi-open where Inds can choose their ballot, and bigger in those than closed primary states
