A long read worth your time especially if you're feeling stuck in despair about our political and social prospects. Consider listening to the audio version, too.

I've been awaiting @cjdenial.bsky.social's book ever since she mentioned it was in the works, and now it's here!!! We could definitely use more kindness in higher ed, and I'm so glad that we have this book to help light the way.

If you don’t watch cycling I want to share the joy of Eritrean Biniam Girmay, who is the first Black person to win a stage in the Tour de France and now won his second! In the first week! And he’s in green, which means he’s winning the most sprints (and beating Jasper Phillipsen, which is great.)
if i had to pinpoint the beginning of the internet's long decline i would say it's when "search-engine optimisation" became a thing
burying the worthwhile beneath the profitable has been the death knell of every industry ever
Just when I thought I was done book shopping today, I went back in for a bit of poetry and this is what came with me. 100% thanks to @davidnaimon.bsky.social & Between The Covers!
The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them
Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”
Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.
Help, I'm in a college town for the next few hours and the B&N that actually sells books is closed today & tomorrow. 🤔 Campus bookstore sells almost every branded item + tech & other supplies, but hardly any books that are not textbooks. What?! 🙄
Over the weekend, one of the major party presidential candidates promoted the idea of trying a former congresswoman for treason with televised military tribunals, and I’ll bet you haven’t seen a news article—much less a catastrophizing op-ed—about it.
Pardon me if you’ve already seen this. For anyone struggling with how to write alt-text effectively, this advice is helpful. cloudfour.com/thinks/write...
Quick YA recommendation: my 9yo has fallen in love with Lumberjanes! I got the first 4 volumes for her on Thriftbooks to see if she'd be into them (there are, I believe, NINETEEN volumes) and she's going through them at a rate of 1 per day. Great summer reading.
Can't stop thinking about the buckling of centrist parties under the pressure of the anti-trans crucible. Not because they believe differently now but because they can't handle pressure. They cosplayed allyship for years, and it never occurred to them that they might have to actually do something.
My rule right now is that if someone doesn’t answer an email / text / request / invitation that I assume that they’re dealing with some things and depending on the relationship I either check in to make sure they’re okay or I leave them in peace. I do not take it personally
Reminder that lots of people you encounter are hanging on to a thread by their fingernails so unless it's psychedelics, therapy, a meaningfully viable organizational roadmap, a hug, or some other real support, maybe ask yourself if what you're about to offer is helpful or if you're just startin shit
