We're very saddened to hear about the passing of Jane McAlevey, a true legend in labor organizing. May her memory be a blessing. Her lessons certainly are.

Le Pen's party (RN) got 143 seats. While a record, that's far (very far) from the 289 they hoped for to govern. How?! Hundreds of Left & Macronist candidates dropped out to help each other block the RN. And millions of voters then voted strategically to get that job done.

Bolts is akin to Last Week Tonight: a much deeper dive on important issues than you're likely to get most anywhere else. Like, they have a guide to judicial elections. This is important stuff that gets skipped over by way too many outlets.
For folks who've appreciated my coverage of the French elections... @bolts.bsky.social is quite different—but we cover US politics with such attention to detail. So give us a follow if you've enjoyed this, and care about the US. And our newsletter is free! boltsmag.org/newsletter

look - I'm receptive to both "no, it's gotta be him" arguments and "he's gotta step aside" arguments. not to be wishy-washy but both arguments have merit. "then we do a tourney" is OTOH flatly hilarious. yeah that'll go great. there will much much unity in the wake of the electoral deathmatch
To save democracy, the Democratic party may resort to deploying the greatest concept of all time: a political version of the NBA In-Season Tournament

A seasonal wave of #Covid is sweeping across the U.S., driven by the FLiRT variants, a trio of the latest #SARSCoV2 mutants making the rounds. So no, it's not your imagination. People are getting Covid again www.seattletimes.com/nation-world...

Jane McAlevey has died. Rest in peace to a titan of the labor movement. Cruel fate has taken her from us when we needed her the most, as fascists are on the march and we need a fighting working class to stop it. Yet, her contributions will not be forgotten. The union will roll on and win for her.

So for all the narrative about the inevitable slide into anti-immigrant populism, four of Western Europe's five largest countries now have left or center left governments?

I credit Fred Clark’s Slacktivist blog with introducing me to this perspective. The apocalypse—like William Gibson’s “the future—is here, but unevenly distributed. It’s not a singular event, but a thing that happens to people and communities.
the apocalypse is ongoing. it’s been happening since before we were born. if you’re waiting for some irrefutable tipping point to do something different; it’s not going to happen

I wrote this in 2017, shortly after Macron's 1st win. I said: Macron is so open about being hostile to Left, that it salvages a huge path for the broad left to be an alternative... if it manages to unite. Few things I've ever written have aged so well. democracyjournal.org/arguments/re...

Here's what's up right now on French TV: Lots of politicians are fighting, & it's complicated to figure out what's going on. This level of fragmentation in Parliament just has not happened under this constitutional regime, designed in 1958; this is unprecedented territory.

According to initial estimates, the Nouveau Front Populaire left-wing alliance is projected to win between 172 and 192 seats in France's Assemblée Nationale, slightly ahead of Macron's coalition (between 150 and 170) and well ahead of the far-right Rassemblement National (between 132 and 152).

The 2nd leading pollster projects a similar result—if anything a higher range for the Left coalition. This wld be a much stronger result than expected for the Macron bloc. If confirmed, key takeaway: Left & Macronist voters transferred onto each other much more than expected. Clear anti-RN front.
