I get that. But I think Democrats are fooling themselves if they believe a replacement candidate who isn’t Kamala Harris is a less-risky choice.

Breaking news: President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.

Doesn’t the fact that the GOP won the House in 2022 when a 50/50 Senate went +1 to the Democrats suggest that incompetent campaigning on the part of House Democrats might have more to do with why they’re in the minority now than the top of the ticket?

Roger Severino wrote the HHS chapter. In the first paragraph he lists "LGBTQ+ equity" first on his list of where Biden has gone wrong, and repeats that claim repeatedly. He also argues that LGBTQ+ equity is a threat to religious liberty. So, I'd say yes it would, at least in any practical sense.

i feel like not enough attention is being paid to the fact that Trump posted Obama's home address last year and a jan 6 rioter showed up there with guns, bragging on a livestream that he was looking for a "good angle on a shot" before the Secret Service caught him www.nbcnews.com/politics/jus...
why is there a completely different set of standards for trump
Jan. 6 defendant arrested at Obama's home is hit with new felony chargeswww.nbcnews.com Online sleuths identified Taylor Taranto in 2021, but he was arrested only after he showed up near the former president's home with weapons in a van, prosecutors say.

Agreed this is great. And I can't help noticing that she is the third Black writer at the New York Times who has been badgered off BlueSky in recent months. That the devs haven't yet treated anti-Black racism as an existential crisis after a year speaks poorly of their long term vision.
THE Best thing I have read in a long time: on life, binaries, what matters. Only real binary is life v death (and I would argue even that one will be rethought). But Polgren is right to list ALL the sources of regret about past choices & to note that none specifically attaches to transition - Gift:
Opinion | Born This Way? Born Which Way?www.nytimes.com The panic over transgender children is driven by the fear that they’ll regret transitioning. But freedom to make mistakes is core to being human.

Am I wrong that Project 2025 would eliminate LGBTQ+ rights?

Watching the press once again downplay extremist anti-queer hate speech at the RNC is as unnerving as the hate speech itself. After the last six months, it sticks out that they see us as an exception to the “no calls for death” norm. I’d love for queer folks to count as people, someday, to them.

Still amazed by how quickly we all moved on from the USSS wiping its comm records after the January 6 insurrection.
Of all the many fantasies that The West Wing propagated about American political life, the most absurd in light of many subsequent events was the idea that the Secret Service was an incorruptible and superbly-run organization staffed by consummate professionals.

I’ve said it before, but I think one of the more honest things Biden can do is to re-draft the U.S. Strategy for Fighting Corruption to either say it’s fine for other countries to operate via family patronage or to refocus its efforts internally at the federal judiciary.
Even When Big Cases Intersect With Their Families’ Interests, Many Judges Choose Not to Recusewww.propublica.org Ambiguous — and unenforced — recusal standards mean few checks and balances for top judges when cases involve their family members.

Most folks won't notice this and the top-line is kinda similar, but perhaps worth calling out anyway: Vance's anti-abortionism is importantly /different/ to most evangelical anti-abortionism, tho the top-line is the same; it's secular white-nationalist rooted, not to a belief in pre-birth rights
From the JD Vance (Senate) campaign website. JD Vance would ban every single woman (or girl) from receiving an abortion, no matter the circumstances by which she was impregnated or the danger to her health. Maybe (just maybe) if she risks imminent death.

Vance also pledged to block DOJ appointees because of Trump investigations, while calling for DOJ investigations into Biden. He will fuel the politicization of the DOJ. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

Vance has pledged to use state power to also go after foundations and universities he disagrees with by removing their nonprofit tax status. www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2021/0...
J.D. Vance on Ford Foundation: "We Are Actively Subsidizing The People Who Are Destroying This Country"www.realclearpolitics.com J.D. Vance, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Ohio, appeared on 'Tucker Carlson Tonight' on Wednesday and reacted to fracas at the "Multicultural Center" at the Arizona State University. Two students with "Police Lives Matter" stickers triggered the ire of a female student of color, a Ford Foundation fellow, that admonished them for being there. Carlson said that this student is just one of many that are scholars of Ford Foundation, a non-partisan with tax-exempt status. "Through its program of fellowships, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students," reads the description for the fellowship program. "AOC talks about taxing the wealthy, but the Harvard University endowment pays zero tax," Vance said. "The Ford Foundation that funds those radicals pays zero tax. They are not actually going to tax their wealthy friends who are funding radical left-wing ideology." "This ideology is going to destroy our country," he said. "It gets special tax privileges from the American taxpayer to do that." "We are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars in ill-gotten accumulated wealth," Vance said on FOX News. "It serves as a tax haven for left-wing billionaires and what do they do with this? They fund critical race theory, they fund ridiculous racism, they fund teaching 6-year-olds that they should, you know, cast off their gender. We are actively subsidizing the people who are destroying this country, and they call it a charity." VANCE: The basic way this works is that the Ford Foundation, the Gates Foundation, the Harvard University endowment, these are fundamentally cancers on American society, but they pretend to be charities, so they benefit from preferential tax treatment. So AOC talks about taxing the wealthy, but the Harvard University endowment pays zero tax. The Ford Foundation that funds those radicals pays zero tax. They are not actually going to tax their wealthy friends who are funding radical left-wing ideology. What they're going to do is tax normal Americans and protect their friends, protect their special privileges so they have the resources to continue to fund what is ultimately the destruction of our country. This ideology is going to destroy our country. It gets special tax privileges from the American taxpayer to do that. Of course the left-wing radicals are not going to talk about it because they care more about identity politics than lifting up the American worker. And these foundations are the ultimate institutions of identity politics. When you think about it, this is crazy, Tucker. We are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars in ill-gotten accumulated wealth. It serves as a tax haven for left-wing billionaires and what do they do with this? They fund critical race theory, they fund ridiculous racism, they fund teaching 6-year-olds that they should, you know, cast off their gender. We are actively subsidizing the people who are destroying this country, and they call it a charity. It's just ridiculous.

The "Aryan" anagram in the company name is a nice flourish
That Vance is a direct line to Thiel and Andreessen is truly important. Trump wants their money. Thiel wants to sell billions in Palantir contracts to power Trump’s mass surveillance/ethnic cleansing infrastructure. Pence was the Christian Nationalists’ guy. Vance is reactionary capital’s.

Trump picking the most fascist person on the VP shortlist is good, in that it clarifies. Less space for denial. If you believe candidates who lose elections should lie and get violent, want to switch to Russia’s side in Ukraine, and hope America becomes more like Hungary, you’ve got your ticket.

Are you a fan of all of those guys who are directly responsible for making the internet an unusable dogshit hellhole? Well boy do I have a VP for you.

If it were Nikki Haley, Marco Rubio, or someone else that does the traditional balancing the ticket move, we’d get a lot more “but he doesn’t really mean it” nonsense. Picking JD Vance is a blatant “yes, we fundamentally oppose Constitutional democracy and equality under the law.”

Looking forward to the reaction from the Free Press -- where the front page is currently chock full of both-sidesism and Trump apologia -- to Trump picking a running mate who called on DOJ to charge a journalist with "insurrection" for writing an op-ed that was published in the Washington Post.

It’s a complete repudiation of the idea that Trump has changed or is interested in unity.
Trump’s VP pick … — demanded the DOJ open a criminal investigation of a journalist for “insurrection” over an op-ed critical of Trump — spouted replacement theory garbage — called for criminal prosecutions of other Trump critics — blamed Biden for Trump shooting — called for Biden’s prosecution
