i don't know whether AOCs call for impeaching the justices will be the right one (it doesn't have a chance in hell of getting through), but the conversation has to start with congress, who are prime offenders in letting the court get to this point, and i'm encouraged someone there recognizes that

i'm no campaign strategist and i have a poster's instincts, not a candidate's, but i'd like to see biden kick at least some of this shit back across the fence and get the world's laziest deliberative body to fucking wake up and do their jobs
Avatar
imho it's crucial Overton Window shifting. even for Dems opposing it, it gives them space to say "look i'm not sure that it's impeachable, but clearly this court must be reined in with concrete constraints"

given impeachment thresholds, I think "expand the court" or some purely legislative answer is the only realistic one that could get through at the same time, I think the sentiment behind impeachment is the right one, because the message should be that these maniacs have failed and must be removed
Avatar
I think given the way the right has weaponized centrist Dems' pathological fear of conflict the only answer is to nut up & start to behave with the same urgency as the rhetoric not like Putin & the GOP haven't pushed all the chips into the center of the table FFS

I would ask the DOJ to start serious investigations into any US company taking any kind of money at all from Russia; I would encourage them to impound stuff peremptorily.
Avatar
McDonalds has a partnership with a 31% stake in the fake McDonalds in Russia? I'm sorry that's ours. Tell the DOJ to prioritize right wing groups since that's not apparently outside the president's executive mandate.
Avatar
This is realistically probably true, but we don't get hear without AOC and others banging the impeachment drum to move the public on the issue of court reform. At least somebody understands the concept of performative acts to drive the national discourse which seems like an arcane secret to Schumer
Avatar
Maybe Durbin is the bigger culprit on this specific issue. The point remains, the senior dem leadership don't know how to fight to shape public opinion, they just keep commissioning polls and triangulation for all the success it has given them in 20 years.
Avatar
Malpractice for elected Dems not to at a minimum crank up the rhetoric months ago. Rhetoric might have worked
Avatar
Yeah, I support it in the sense that it seems to meet the moment in a way that Dick Durbin furrowing his brow again does not
Avatar
not my original idea, but borrowing from elsewhere: never mind if she has the votes or not, do it anyway so people have to vote yea or nay on it. make them show their faces on it. (i am eliding all procedural details here; i'm less concerned with the mechanics than the vibes)

She’s using impeachment because the republicans have control of the House. Can’t add to the SC from the minority
Avatar
What about creating and ratifying a new constitution entirely? The current one's Article VII sort of provides a guideline or outline of what happened to the Articles of Confederation.
Avatar
Impeachment is an appropriate response, but a politics that admitted it as a possibility wouldn't require it. We need new laws, but we don't have a Congress that would give them. So all we can do is say what we would do, if we could.
Avatar
I am all one for embracing more grotesque rhetoric and encouraging raw anger and hatred toward the republicans
Avatar
I'm at least open to every idea, and this is a thing within her power and within her responsibility. Though because of the House it will go nowhere, the Senate won't even get a chance to kill it.
Avatar
I'm not sure that her proposal will work--I mean, the GOP currently hold the house and Speaker Johnson is a Trump suck-up. However...if it lights a fire under people's feet to make sure that Democrats win the House and keep the Senate in November, then what she proposes may be a big help.
Avatar
I believe it’s designed to do just that. Light a fire to get people to vote blue.
Avatar
If that's the case...let's make sure it succeeds. And for what it's worth, I believe it will.
Avatar
It’s worth talking about, whether it is a chance or not. Would be nice to make all the Dems vote
Avatar
She gets that you have to do something beyond acting 'very concerned'. No matter how far it can get, it can give the base a little energy boost and signal to Republicans that Dems won't take everything lying down.
Avatar
It shows she actually gives a fuck about saving our country.
Avatar
Morelle is proposing a constitutional amendment reversing the decision. Some of these folks understand the moment.
Avatar
Someone gonna smash a Moons Over My Hammy over Alito's head and they gonna blame it on AOC.

Avatar
Durbins office did some weak ass 'threatens the rule of law' statement. Dude, threat was made long ago, this is the fkn follow through.
Avatar
Durbin is my senator and he continues to reply with form letters assuring that “Chief Justice Roberts will do the right thing”. They still don’t understand what playing field they are even standing on.
Avatar
If the Senate, Congress, the WH, & Schumer’s/Durbin’s offices get lots of angry calls from us, over the next several days, they’ll at least get a sense of the public pressure they ought to be responding to.
Avatar
Absolutely agree...it's time, and it needs to he taken seriously. They've gone too far....let me refrase that. They already gone too far with killing Roe, but now they're just mocking the US. SCOTUS needs to be dealt with
Avatar
The issue isn't necessarily the performative politics. It's blaming Democrats when the performative politics on their own fail.
Avatar
It would mostly be political theater, but potentially the sort that motivates new laws.
Avatar
Expand the court Expand the House Expand the franchise
Avatar
I think AOC’s purpose here is to do just that – get it on the Congressional record that there are members of Congress who are paying attention to the court’s corruption.
Avatar
I'm hoping it at least raises public awareness and puts politicians on record. "Do you support lawless presidents?"
Avatar
She is one of the best parliamentarians in there right now but also understands the interplay between the House, the media, and voters, and how to position herself there in a maximally useful way. The left and the wider coalition are very lucky to have her there.
Avatar
Well then abolish congress. Might as well, they don't do anything.
Avatar
The entire point of the Supreme Court is to be a non bias party. This is getting incredibly out of hand
Avatar
Imagine if the courts were flipped on the Democrats side, and they kept pulling this shit. There would be countless calls for impeachment from the right.
