Man i have been saying for a minute that voters everywhere are rejecting fascist shit and it’s only the media that makes us think otherwise, but it’s nice to see that in play right now

I keep seeing and hearing Oprah and Michelle Obama invoked in conversations over what to do about the Dem ticket, and there is an … unmistakable overtone sounded by the reflexive mentioning of their names.
Hey you guys wanna see the dumbest plan to replace Biden possible? www.semafor.com/article/07/0...

(Also, in agreement with the below: FWIW, I do not think Michelle Obama or Oprah Winfrey would make themselves participants in a plan to sideline Kamala Harris. That's _extremely_ hard to imagine.)
by choosing anyone other than harris to replace biden should he decide to step aside, the party would be revealing they very cynically chose her as veep for optics without believing she could actually be president.

Le Pen was not mightier, hm? Hon-hon-hon!
Here's some fashy tears for your Sunday.

So voting is better than *not* voting when it comes to getting what you want? Huh.
BREAKING NEWS: Voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Huh, it’s as if the paper’s editors learned absolutely nothing from this.* (* of course they didn’t.)
I know they get rolled all the time but for the Times to get rolled by “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is the Times putting the 14 words in the paper

bad luck for biden to run in an electoral cycle where "are you old" is the most important issue instead of in one of the cycles where email security procedures or accuracy of vietnam war medal citations was the most important issue in the country.

(But also, too:)
In the past few decades we have mostly been laissez-faire, hard libertarian, about our media. But media is intertwined with democracy, and there are structural things we can change to make media better: e.g. consolidation and ownership rules, public subsidy in some form, etc.

Was thoroughly baked into the cake, though. It’s much more detached and impartial-seeming to cover _that_ than, say, the prospect of impending authoritarianism.

I know, right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know, 100% — but as for myself, I’ll do it with bells on.

As I was telling my old friend @jameshupp.bsky.social, I took enough French classes to say it your way, but I think we’re in the minority on that pronunciation.

Again, the angle the reactionary press would _like to_ take against Vice President Harris rhymes with “bigger niche” — which might play well with its core audiences, but might also appall some voters the GOP needs.
Couldn’t even muster a capital letter P for “DEI president” in this poorly-worded, inflammatory, heat-seeking headline.

Right. These people aren’t redefining felony or villainy; they’re flaunting it.
an entire movement of wicked people who celebrate wickedness

Sure, Trump has degenerates among his supporters — and crooks in his inner circle — but that hardly “redefines” stigma around felony. In a society beset by groundless moral panics over shoplifting & violent crime, though, a rush to “redefine” felony speaks volumes of those doing the rushing.

if stealing classified docs and lying about it while no longer in office is an "official act", we are well and truly cooked

I do captioning for a living, & a big part of my job is cleaning up false starts & filler words. That has always been the norm at every media outlet. Print media edits Trump so carefully that you would never know what he actually sounds like. Doing this to Biden is a 180 from decades of policy.
Now everyone--The Times and, sorry to say, MSNBC--is noting every missed syllable. The man has a stutter. I don't stutter but I am a mushmouth who speaks too fast and slurs words. I've had to overcome fear of public speaking. I have empathy for Biden. The press has empathy for no one (but Trump).

This is particularly important to understand because Trumpist authoritarianism is the descendent of Jim Crow far more than say Hitler or Pinochet or Orban, and it's going to look a lot more like 1930s Mississippi than 1930s Berlin.
For most of its history, America hasn’t been a democracy, by any meaningful definition of the term! This isn’t some It Can’t Happen Here shit, in a way, it’s already happened. It just may not have directly affected you.

i’ll tell you what, man, if biden manages to survive and win another term, i hope he and his aides remember that it was mostly the ancient centrists — not the progressives and not the younger dems — who came behind up him with the knives, and that he responds in kind.
notably, “trying to assemble” and “has assembled” are two extremely different things and if he were able to do the latter, his ratshit ass wouldn’t be leaking the former.

Yeah, he’s gonna have to get used to cohabitation, and it seems clear he doesn’t wanna.
