i think akhil amar reed captures something very important, which is that the roberts court rewrote article ii, which explicitly states that a president can be held criminally liable after impeachment (and which has long been understood to mean that he can be held liable after leaving office)

so much of the power and the terror of the Republican party comes from the sclerotic, antidemocratic features of the American system trump has always lost the popular vote! if that meant he *actually* lost we'd be living in a different world!

Others arguing furiously with someone I’ve already blocked is just this guilty little glimpse into a suffering that I’ve already escaped. If you haven’t had the pleasure, you’re probably not blocking enough people.

It's just hilariously disingenuous. Imagine looking at, say, ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and concluding that the biggest threat to liberty isn't abuse of power, but powerful people refraining from sufficiently wielding their authority out of fear that they might one day be held accountable.

It's not the worst of it, but what I may be actually angriest about (right now) is Roberts' smarmy smugness and dismissiveness in the final two paragraphs of section IV and the whole of section V. "Fear mongering," "extreme hypotheticals," "our perspective must be more farsighted," and this.

I get the appeal of nationalism/nativism in your own country. But I find it bizarre that the same people are pushing it all over the globe. We know what happens when lots of countries in the same region go full nationalist, and it's definitely not a situation that's friendly to isolationism.

One reason for the decline in the success rate of military coups is seizing the national broadcaster gets you effectively none of the information control it once did. For all we bemoan its real disruptions and downsides, the free and open internet is still a glorious net positive for humanity.
