Many people, when they hear the name #Gaza, think it’s just a place full of camps. But we had some of the most beautiful houses and some of the finest and most elegant places. Gaza was beautiful, but this catastrophe changed everything #freepalestine #palestine #khanyounis gofund.me/d4d5adbd

My first thought this morning after I remembered the news was how many people over the last few years have put their bodies between armed far right guys and kids going to the library or a bookstore

What a world it would be if our nation’s leaders’ stance against violence - political or otherwise - extended beyond acts against them and their peers. To fund wars and genocides abroad and enable police brutality here and then turn around and say, “Violence is never the answer”? 😒 Sure, Jan.

Come visit me, Seattle!! I'm right by the Beacon Hill station at the street fair until 4 today!
HEY SEATTLE! I'm going to be vending at the Beacon Arts Street Fair this Saturday. I'll be selling my books and photographs and I'll have my mobile curiosity cabinet set up and hopefully live tardigrades under the microscope. Come talk nature with me if you're in the area!

My take on whether Biden should drop out is that you should research the candidates for your local school board, city council, and county council, and then go campaign against the right wing weirdos who are surely trying to gain power in your community

I've been doing some very-barely-adjacent-to-publishing book things lately. Today's project is compiling years worth of blog posts on a friend's blog into a baby book for each of her kids. I generally am biased against print on demand, but this is a genuinely great use of it. Baby books are so 🥰

Stars and planets, THIS. This FOREVER. And also the missing art of folks who were passed over and shut out because such men didn't want to fuck them in the first place and therefore just utterly ignored them
Hot take: I'm truly not interested in hand wringing over how much people will miss enjoying the books of men who have turned out to be abusers. I'm far more concerned about the missing art that women haven't been able to create/publish because they crossed paths with such men.

And arguably what I am enjoying most is that this is not the hero theory of history. We’re not seeing a charismatic leader carry the election through rhetoric and force of personality. We’re seeing populations say: nope. I like the power of nope.

With everything in politics so terrifying all the time, I try my hardest to keep the faith in my fellow citizens that I know is valid. The system is broken, and evil might win. But it won't win because our communities are evil. Our communities, our fellow citizens, are good, and worth fighting for
Look how fun shutting down fascists is. I want this for us, too

Ok - this is a question I get a LOT, and am starting to get a lot again. Here are a few tips on calling electeds: 1. Try not to stress too much about the method of contact - e.g. email/calling. The important thing is getting in touch.

It also makes me feel insane that the rat fuck around Biden’s age and mental capacity is being uncritically spread around by Democrats when Trump is *incredibly obviously* grotesquely mentally incapacitated, in a way that is genuinely terrifying.
It makes me feel very much unmoored from reality to see all this *buying into* the Biden Too Old ratfuck narrative, days after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump gets to be dictator for life, just weeks after Trump became a convicted felon (oh, and there’s the Epstein stuff that just came out).

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”
Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.

Most *white* Americans. There is no country on earth that imprisons more of its population than the US. Prisoners disproportionately Black. The US leads the world in child executions. Not a typo. Disproportionately Black. Life expectancy for US Black folk lower than for Uighur Chinese. Not a typo

Also it turns out that none of us can be experts at everything, but most of us can be experts at SOMETHING. This obsession we've developed with everyone going 100% on all issues at all time is very inefficient. Specialize. Do the best at your thing, and then let others tell you how to help theirs.
Really cannot emphasize enough the emotional benefit of picking a spot where you can have an outsize impact and digging in to really work on it in addition to your other efforts. My contributions to protecting anonymity online have been SUCH a motivator for avoiding despair.

No shame in feeling scared, overwhelmed and not knowing what to do. To me feeling one's feelings doesn't preclude taking action. These are confusing times. Give yourself some grace.

tell me why when I get paid for a piece there's a processing fee that's deducted from the payment I receive, but when I pay my rent there's a processing fee that gets added to what I pay Feels like it should be the opposite tbh

When the empty ugliness at the centers of power becomes clear to you, if that is a sharp, new, devastating feeling, a good thing to do is to follow the instructions of those far from centers of power who have been seeing, surviving, strategizing & surviving for a long, long time.

Gonna keep saying this & will die on this hill: Bad news without any guidance on what to do about it [at least some ideas] demobilizes and often encourages inaction. We on the Left(s) have to avoid cynicism which is deeply corrosive and also counterrevolutionary.
