Cramming AI into things you never, ever asked it to be crammed into. And making all of them immeasurably worse.

Hiya. A lot of you are reacting to this. Would it be gouache if I promoted my writings here? If you liked the golden age of SNES RPGs, then you'll like my stuff. www.fortunasaga.com

Notepad++ has been better for ages anyway. And Editpad.

Agreed, but it's harder to think of a better example of AI brainrot than this.
Avatar
Fair. Even a simple, no frills bloody text editor is too much to ask for these days apparently.

(opens mouth to mention Emacs but thinks better of it)

If it helps, this is happening because every CEO issued a top down mandate to their corporations to figure out use cases so that they can prove the need, and this is workers doing their level best to implement the stupidity they are asked to, or be laid off like all the other naysayers.

Honestly, that "scratch files" feature is one of my favorite application features ever. And the macro & multi-language (coding) support make this one of the first apps I add to any computer I'm going to use regularly.

I regularly look for something comparable to Notepad++ when working on my Mac. I used the macro feature heavily

This is MSFT using everyone’s notes to improve their predictive language models…

Implementing AI into Notepad is like hiring a tech entrepreneur to run a child's lemonade stand.
Avatar
Wasn't that a Boondocks episode
Avatar
Probably. I haven't watched enough Boondocks
Avatar
Can confirm, loosely yes
Avatar
Sure, if you wanted the lemonAIde stand to fail.

Using AI in vs code requires a monthly fee, so joke's on MSFT

We lost wordpad for this

FFS why?!? Do they have to destroy all clean tools?

I can’t wait until I’m forced to upgrade to 11 😐

Think I'll just stick with Linux from now on...

I'm clinging on to 10 til the last. Hoping this will all blow over before they make me.

If it helps Notepad open a file with Unix line endings, and not re-save the file with a bunch of ^M's, I'm all for it.

There's a pretty obvious solution to this, and I'm already using it. Notepad++ It's free, open source, and does everything Notepad could do.... but also does program code syntax highlighting and other neat things like that (if your language is not supported, you can MAKE it supported with a patch!)
Avatar
i have zero sympathy for anyone using windows; you brought this upon yourselves
Avatar
That's certainly a take for using the most used OS on the planet

"The AI feature will allow users to rewrite text, make text shorter or longer, and change tone or format" I can't believe AI just invented the Backspace key

That was totally worth sinking billions of dollars and tons of irreplaceable natural resources into

I'm just waiting for these companies to realize no one outside of their boardrooms actually wants/needs any of this stuff 🤷‍♂️ *continues waiting*
Avatar
Thing is that VC wants it, and way too many of these companies are far more interested in scooping up their money than anything else They don't even expect to GET revenue from consumers, they expect to run on VC cash until they get acqui-hired by Facebook or whoever
Avatar
Even with Microsoft, they're just riding that tech hype cycle that gets the investment money to pile in, insulating them when the next downturn comes Their consumer business is a) Excel and b) ?? so yeah
Avatar
Sadly they won't until they've burned billions up on billions of dollars and get nothing back in exchange. When they could be putting that money toward solving actual problems with, say, housing and become national heroes...
