Every single time I think things like “the British Empire established a global telegraphic network,” I discover when you go deep into history that actually they only accomplished that by clear cutting gutta percha forests in British Malaysia and causing mass displacement and famine.

The British East India Company was also the literal largest scale drug dealer in recorded history. That's where the UK got its money- looting and drugs.

It's because they want to privatize weather. They tried doing it under his last administration but many people didn't really notice beyond the weird hurricane drawing he did. It's also why they cut (or at least tried to it's been a minute since I read that stuff) a bunch of NASA Earth's funding too

Yet again why we HAVE to focus on social justice in regards to climate change. The people who suffer the most will be the people least responsible. There is no climate fight without climate justice.

If you ever wonder why people in certain neighborhoods in your city are always congregating outside on the sidewalks during the summer maybe you should consider how privileged you are to ask that question. (I am not talking about me. I am very lucky to have air conditioning in other rooms.)

There is never any shame in using the library, and much benefit in doing so. They are the closest thing to an unmitigated social good that we have in these United States, which is why the hard right is gunning so fervently for them these days. A world without libraries and librarians is a poor one.

My book-buying budget is not what it once was, which is precisely why I’m using the library more. It also gives me the opportunity to read books that I’m not sure I want to add to the home library (not that there’s a lot of room to do that anyway).

Honestly if liberals just took the GOP's tack of "lol of course they're going to say whatever they can to make Biden look bad, but he's our guy, and they're all the enemy" instead of doing a whole Chicken Little about "oh no he's not performing well in 'debates'" it could've been a non-story.

What's fascinating (and tangly) about this is that we saw the same and similar and actually even more ableism (and ageism) repeatedly used against Trump from 2015 to 2020 (and beyond) and it had little to no effect on him, his campaigns or the support from his backers.

My mom did this when she was still in her twenties. She had multiple siblings and four kids at that point. It's a lot to remember when you're stressed or tired or just trying to get kid number 2 to stop running with the scissors even though they're just plastic, it's a bad habit, dang it!

I too used to be an 'oh, NOW you care' person when I was younger. I was profoundly annoyed with ppl who didn't "understand" what I already knew & then all of a sudden started caring. Then I realized that was a ME issue, not at all about them. EYE was annoyed while THEY were coming to consciousness.
