There is a feedback loop of money and adoration that slowly nudges their personal Overton window, and they just adopt and even believe the ideas that get the most attention.
I remember reading Nate Silver's comforting analysis that Trump had less than a 2% chance of winning the presidency because there were like 8 clear things he had to do (GOP nomination, beat Dem opponent, etc.) and Nate gave him a 50/50 chance at each of those things, equaling voila! <2%. Brilliant
Remember the line in American Horror Story, seson 6, subtitled "Cult" where Sarah Paulson's character was just bawling bcz of the 2016 prez election ourcome and she shouts, "F*CK YOU, NATE SILVER!!!"
