Do people know about Congress’s slavery gag rules in the 1830s and 1840s? About Laurens Pinckney and John Quincy Adams?
Avatar
Adams’ intentional courting of censure & then use of the censure rules - requiring two weeks of debate - to get around the gag rule leaves me lost in admiration every time I think about it. That was some quality procedural work. And then he got the censure tabled! A hero!

They ran all the way to the secession crisis in 1860. Also: Southern postmasters confiscated abolitionist publications and logged their senders and destinations.

Obviously here in the south we only know history if there’s a statue (I’ve been assured this is the primary way in which knowledge is transferred). So no.

That's probably where they got their inspiration

Party of “Law and Order” nominates a convicted felon, party of “Free Speech” imposes a gag on the House floor… yeah, that all tracks.

I would do it every single day, every time I spoke I would ask for clarification about the admonishment make them OWN this bullshit

Yet another reason for every Democrat to use the phrase "convicted felon Donald Trump" every time they mention his name.

An ADMONISHMENT?! Charles Sumner must be looking down from heaven in awe at anyone who risks an admonishment from Lauren Boebert

I presume they can reference “President Biden, who famously is not a convicted felon”.

every democrat should find a way to mention that he's a convicted felon into every conversation

Don't do the crime if you don't want people to call you a convicted felon on the House floor.

“while disparaging President Biden and Democrats is routine.”
Avatar
Not anywhere near the most important point, but it pains me to see a misuse of "whomever" in the New York Times.
Avatar
👍 I find the whoever/whomever thing confusing. But I guess the trick is simply to cover up "ever" and see how it sounds.

An amazing merry pranksters campaign would be to send fainting pillows to every Republican member of Congress along with a warm fuzzy mash note wishing them good health every time their beloved felonious monster is mentioned as a convicted felon on the House floor.
Avatar
Democrats should simply mention Joe Biden with the words, "President Biden, who is NOT a convicted felon and is NOT an adjudicated sex offender" and I mean EVERY time.
Avatar
Oh hell no, I want every single Democrat to bring this up they cannot pull this BS.

Looks like “Trump” just “felon” his own sword. Streisand Effect, do your thing!

It's a statement of fact. They can say his age and his address and his height, but not that he's been convicted? GTFOOH

Could they mention he might have reservations at Rikers Island?

What about civil convictions. Can they chat about the sexual assault
Avatar
Ideally Democrats would say it every time they spoke.

Mr Speaker, while awaiting sentencing it is customary to use the term convicted felon when referring to those who have violated the Law of the Land. What alternatives would you recommend instead? Is the term convicted fraudster a reasonable alternative to someone found guilty by a 12 person jury?
Avatar
Instead of denying reality, they could try not backing a criminal.

All the Democrats in the House shout chant together, "Donald Trump is a convicted felon!"
Avatar
I would talk about nothing else.

If anyone ever thought the Republican party cared about objective truth...like the fact that Donald John Trump has been convicted of business fraud in the pursuit of election tampering...they are fooling themselves.
So, maybe a cult?

Republicans can't handle the truth.

Can we say he’s … facing extremely long odds now?

Read this gift article to find out how creatively Jamie Raskin is getting around Republican censorship of mentioning Trump's felony convictions.
