I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

for me the Biden conversation is entirely about whether he can win in November. i’m not worried about whether he can actually do the job because i don’t think it’s a real job.

it’s so funny how in America you call it an elevator but in the UK it’s a lift and also when a candidate loses they concede

IMO this is a straight-up ageist and ableist image, no?

Just as fearlessness isn't "not having fear" it's "keeping going in spite of your fear" being hopeful isn't "being blind to the situation" it's "continuing to push despite the odds."

I would be very happy if part of Donald Trump's sentence in New York was requiring him to make a public reading, without edits, of today's 31 page decision for the disbarment of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, which debunks most of FPOTUS's claims of election fraud in 2020.

Going public with an experience like this is life-altering for a woman, so when you read these stories remember both the extraordinary amount of courage involved and also the likelihood that there are many others you’ll never hear.

The Court ruling today is terrible but expected. I will just gently remind everyone that the election hasn’t happened yet. We shouldn’t assume the worst outcome as a foregone conclusion. That only encourages more apathy than many are already feeling.

It is my studied opinion that John G. Roberts is a smarmy son of a bitch.
It's not the worst of it, but what I may be actually angriest about (right now) is Roberts' smarmy smugness and dismissiveness in the final two paragraphs of section IV and the whole of section V. "Fear mongering," "extreme hypotheticals," "our perspective must be more farsighted," and this.

It's just hilariously disingenuous. Imagine looking at, say, ALL OF HUMAN HISTORY and concluding that the biggest threat to liberty isn't abuse of power, but powerful people refraining from sufficiently wielding their authority out of fear that they might one day be held accountable.

To reiterate what @kenwhite.bsky.social has been saying for a long time... the courts are not going to get us out of this mess. We have to do it at the ballot box.

I still think it's wild that we gave Putin three Supreme Court picks

On Monday, the prosecution and defense will submit their sentencing briefs to Justice Merchan with regard to the 34 felony convictions of Former President Donald Trump. If I were an ADA, I would include Trump’s false statements about the case during last night’s debate in their own section.
Avatar
Just reiterating this, because, unfortunately, it appears to be increasingly relevant.
If Biden literally shat himself during one of the debates, his opponent would still be the guy openly vowing to send federal troops to take over cities, set up mass detention camps, and imprison his critics. The only sane position would still be Team Pants Shitter.

Importing this @volts.wtf thread from the bad place. It opens with a link to a piece that used official data to establish that yes, crime rates are indeed very much down recently. But here’s the thing, Project 2025’s Trump 2.0 promises to destroy that world in which we can “know” things like this.

Whenever Russia conquers territory in Ukraine, it murders civic leaders and other civilians, sets up torture chambers, and deports children for assimilation in Russia. Ukrainians resist because defeat or surrender means Russian genocidal policy on the scale of their entire country.

If Trump wins, it'll get better for them

Justice Thomas argues that the history of the Second Amendment shows no tradition of not explaining to a bitch where she went wrong.
Breaking: The Supreme Court, 8-1, upholds the federal ban on possession of a firearm by those with a domestic violence order out against them. Thomas is the lone dissenter.

My latest is up now in Slate. It’s an election year where crime is an issue, so essential to raise this issue sooner than later: THE 1994 CRIME BILL DID NOT CAUSE MASS INCARCERATION. It didn’t. It. Just. Did. Not.

Excluding actual wars, Brexit is one of the greatest own-goals of all time. Britain and Europe had forged something their finest leaders and intellectuals considered an impossible dream: an alliance of shared prosperity. Then Britain tore it up in a fit of nativist dipshittery.
