Yeah I keep seeing this reaction, but it’s wholly at odds with the history of these things.
The bump Reagan got was short lived and that was the exception to the rule. TR, George Wallace, Gerald Ford all survived attacks but did not win their races.
People who are assuring us that this means Trump is going to win are clearly unfamiliar with the deeply weird lore of this country's THREE mid-seventies presidential-candidate assassination attempts.
My best plan is to stay right where I am. I've thought for years about what I could do to protect myself, and the sad conclusion is that I am safest where I am, in the US, in this blue state. Short of someone taking me in abroad and letting me hide if things go full fash, I have no other options.
The election doesn't matter anymore. If it happens, vote, 100%, all that can must do so. But in reality, it's extremely unlikely that the election will decide who is in charge. Violence will determine it.
It’s hard to overstate what a victory for democracy it is that in France the far right lost to both the center and the left. working together to reject these fascists is key if America does the right thing we can, and will dismantle the worldwide fascist movement and destroy any chance they have had
Thousands in the streets of Paris celebrating and cheering “no pasaran” or "They will not pass” as the far right falls out n France’s election. Just absolutely amazing scenes tonight across France as they fight the fascists back. Now it’s our time to be brave and come together to for a united front.
The far right stochastic network is starting to push its followers into participatory events that are crimes. We are starting to see the game plan for the rights attempt to disrupt the election nationwide not just the process to make it law. This has the hallmark beginning of something really dark.
Here we see a right wing Twitter account with 1.3 million followers being retweeted by an account with 2.5 million followers calling for conservatives to sabotage the upcoming American election. Musk, BTW, has interacted amicably with these accounts several times.
The “it is inevitable” discourse is designed to disempower actual pushback and demoralize voters to turn away or give up on democratic processes and voting. As much as it may seem like things have fully collapsed. Winning the election keeps options on the table that give us actual power to stop this
My body is reacting to stress in ways it has not in 5+ years. I know how to calm my mind and emotions now, and I have. I couldn't back then. I really, really need my body to relax though because frankly, if it doesn't I won't survive fascism long. I can barely move at its strongest.
"The fascist project was to remake human beings into a new kind of ruthless, hard, pitiless entity [and] to expunge humanitarianism from the political system and from people’s consciences." - Richard J. Evans
I’ve had over a decade to miserably marinate on an anti-democratic process in which, to my great sorrow, all my gloomiest, wildest predictions keep coming true.
Despite that, I still don’t think we’re doomed or that we should give up and walk into the sea en masse.
on the record, I’ve been losing my mind with anxiety and fear over the fall of American democracy since 2013, when I noticed how similar U.S. politics was starting to sound to the kleptocracy I reported on in Cambodia.
This is terrifying, but at least we know exactly the enemy’s intention are.
Truthfully, I’ve been a complete existential-dread ridden anxious wreck ever since 2013, to one extent or another, because I kept having my worst fears for the US come true.
I’m legitimately surprised that I’m handling this latest spate of bad signs better than I have in the past. But I am.
I really did spend much of 2013 and 2014 - when I was in grad school at Stanford, immediately after Cambodia - utterly destroyed by anxiety and dread about the GOP extremism I’d realized was coming swiftly down the pipeline in the US. I was a *wreck*.
Hey so…we are in the middle of a far right coup and the far right is telling you they are going to continue and if we try to stop them they will resort to open violence. This is cartoonish and people need to push these fascist now. Not tomorrow not next week we need massive protests and direct action
Caring about things like democracy and wanting to protect one’s friends and family’s civil rights and human rights is good actually. Wanting to maintain at least a non fascist hellscape is good and right. Nihilism and apathy are some of the most potent tools of the autocrat or the fascist.
The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them
The Court ruling today is terrible but expected. I will just gently remind everyone that the election hasn’t happened yet. We shouldn’t assume the worst outcome as a foregone conclusion. That only encourages more apathy than many are already feeling.
We gained loads of subscribers on our last video so now it's time to lose them all by yammering away on a Q&A and catch-up livestream. On Wednesday. Feel free to drop questions below.
So everyone understands project 2025 is already in action right? The judicial coup is a massive part of it. Trump is the figurehead not the real power.
I think something we can all start doing is challenging anyone who implies or directly makes this kind of commentary towards you. Tell them that's not what you care about, and if they persist, be blunt and shut them down, and *insist* on redirecting the conversation elsewhere.
One of the most worrisome and problematic developments of the last few decades is the idea that everything has to be monetized, and that spending time simply taking joy in an activity is somehow wasteful or foolish.
This is what I've been saying about white rural voters for some time now– they don't support Trump because they believe he will help* them, they support him because he reinforces their bigotries.
No book better explains Trumpism than “Dying of Whiteness.” Metzl finds exactly what you’re saying: white people would prefer to suffer than see POC thrive alongside whites.
"My country is facing a war, and we are facing that hate here. My daughter is traumatized; whenever I open the apartment door, she runs away and hides, telling me she is afraid the lady will come and immerse her head in the water again.”
A woman in Texas has been charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child after trying to drown a 3-year-old child at an apartment complex pool and making racial statements, according to police.
It's a historically evidenced outcome of ppl being let down in countless ways & seeking out answers as to why. People with less life experience are especially prone to the influence of causes that provide answers that offer validation & an other to blame. That's what fascists specialize in selling.
I teach in schools and I have never seen young men as radicalised by the far right as they are now. I have never been so often warned by teachers about students before taking their classes. There is a level of rage there that is startling.
“And that’s why the lessons of the Holocaust, which were never meant to provide cover & rationalize state violence & genocide but protect groups, especially stateless and defenseless groups under military occupation & siege from violent states —the lessons of the Holocaust are now very, very urgent”
The University of Minnesota has rescinded its job offer to Raz Segal for his vocal condemnation of the ongoing genocide in Palestine.
Segal was slated to head the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, but is apparently too qualified.
Idk for some of y'all queer is an aesthetic and for me its a way of life, its a lived politic, its sexuality and gender yes but its also making sure my queer family is housed and fed and loved in ways the world has denied us.
Some of y'all want a fandom and not a community.
The coordinated attacks on misinformation researchers and academics who research power and propaganda are accelerating. It’s increasingly seen as dangerous to try and understand the reality of the systems being built around us and to remove our ability to know what truth is.
Awful. Stanford Internet Observatory, a fantastic effort studying online misinfo & related topics, dismantled after "a sustained & increasingly successful campaign among Republicans to discredit research institutions & discourage academics from investigating political speech & influence campaigns."
Neoliberalism demands the appearance of normalcy and order. Masks represent disorder and a threat to the attempts to sweep covid and the necropolitics/eugenic worldview at play in allowing it to continue its spread and kill tens of thousands of Americans unabated. This is deeply authoritarian.
UPDATE: NY Governor Kathy Hochul said on CNN last night that she is considering a ban on masks.
This is absolutely shameful! New York has suffered so much from COVID, and COVID is not over. We should be normalizing and depoliticizing masks, not banning them.
