I mentioned it the other day, but it is hilarious that we're putting all this effort into moving to AI which can't even do math, the one thing computers are able to do fantastically.
Bitter observation, because sorting was one of the earliest (symbolic) applications of the computer ~80 yrs ago, followed by decades of intense research.
Now, "innovation" is making a computer sort incorrectly every time using a dozen orders of magnitude more time & energy, and dead-end fakery.
LLMs and DNNs: Useless for math, sorting, or any symbolic operation, including problem solving or search: Things that were fruitfully optimised for the previous 70 years: bsky.app/profile/symb...
Symbolic AI & (often biomimicking) search/optimising algorithms are exciting because it can produce UNEXPECTED, non-obvious results that are hard for humans to find.
Generative shit only comes up with the bleeding obvious—but far less efficiently &worse than a human could; it can only interpolate.
can't read. need a subscription.
theres this article from IEEE about AI struggling with "quantitative reasoning" (word problems), and i think this is some funny irony: humans creating AI in its image and "likeness": spectrum.ieee.org/large-langua...
I don't get it. It's not like talking to computers is unpopular either, people seem to like it enough to get dedicated listening devices in their houses. Hell anytime I'm on the phone with my mum she tells alexa to hang up, and if I let it hang up for her, it takes like 10 seconds.
Either they imprinted on Star Trek when young or they’re used to dictating everything, instead of keeping their work and texts to themselves like normal people
I am not joking about it anymore when I say " dumbest timeline continues unabated " specifically because I've been saying it for so long now and keep being proven right
When I did it, I think it was a parrot or something. Whatever the first one was, before they moved to the monkey. ..... God I'm old. Wanna know how old? I still remember using Windows 3.1
And then someone will develop an "AI blocker", that automatically just blocks AI-related things.
And then corporations will begin implementing anti-AI-blockers, because it cuts into their precious profits, and this will all begin anew.
Time is a flat circle. 😩
