I know they get rolled all the time but for the Times to get rolled by “actually they just want to reclaim the values of Western civilization as they see it … with larger families and fewer immigrants” is the Times putting the 14 words in the paper

This is an incredibly well done podcast series (season 2 just kicked off) on the long history (and flourishing present) of right wing extremism in Idaho. This is the largely unacknowledged backdrop for that NYTimes story. www.npr.org/podcasts/510...

One of the most powerful quotes I've seen about how this happens to a country and how this pivotal historical moment in America feels.
I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

I almost forgot to share this here but I received word the IND application for the HIV-1 bispecific antibody I have been working on with my team for quite some time now has received a “safe-to-proceed” from the FDA. This marks a huge milestone for us. Today is a good day. 🥹🧪

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

The only two permutations of this that work are: 1) Biden stays in 2) Biden steps aside for Harris but remains in office Everything other permutation of this idea is either a fantasy or propaganda whose discussion is designed to get the Dems to lose the election and usher Trump into power.

Really interesting polling data here. Of course, this is the finding that especially stood out to me--about 80% of GOP county chairs endorse the "republic, not a democracy" meme that the John Birch Society tried to inject into the nation's political bloodstream in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
New at Tusk: Trump and Haley backers view their party, their country, and their world with such stark differences, it's really no surprise no one has unified the party behind them yet.

Look everyone, the Heritage Foundation is just like those scrappy New England farmers who picked up their muskets to preserve their freedom from an overweening government. Anywho, here's the list of donors who gave Heritage >$100K in 2022. This is just one year.

Right-wing legal talking heads are focusing on arguing that it is RIDICULOUS to say that a second-term Trump will be empowered by immunity to do horrific things, while carefully preparing to argue in seven months that it is RIGHT that Trump do horrific things which aren’t actually horrific anyway.

America can accept judicial review as it is defined by this Supreme Court majority – which really means: Reactionary judicial supremacy – or it can have true democracy and functioning governance. But not both.   Please consider subscribing to Democracy Americana:

We talk about how old Dem officials are but the Republican judges are all old enough to remember this (esp. Reagan). This is a longstanding humiliation, not something new or specific to Trump. They believe checks on GOP presidents are inherently wrong, and they finally got the chance to codify that.
It was very traumatic for Republicans to have Nixon resign in disgrace & then 13 years later have Reagan close to being impeached (what saved him as much as anything was an implicit "he's too senile to have been knowingly involved" argument). Partisan hacks like Roberts have never forgotten this.

The States Project is one of the best bang-for-your-buck options for your campaign donations. Even beyond it, though, state legislatures deserve your attention. Next time you're tempted to send money to whoever's going to lose to MTG, send it instead to a contested state leg seat.

An argument I’ve been trying to make about “Project 2025”: A second Trump term would be worse not only because the radical Right would be better prepared, but also because they would be operating under much more favorable circumstances. With a much more extreme Supreme Court, for instance. 1/

Republicans don’t want a Democratic Republic, they want a fascist theocratic oligarchy. They want a dictator. They want a king. That much is clear. Our only hope to save America is to overwhelm them at the ballot box. We are the majority. We the People.

The Roberts Court (led by Roberts) gutted the Voting Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act! I've spent a decade flabbergasted that we aren't all yelling about this *every day.* It's the damn Voting Rights Act!
Between today, Chevron, the reversal of Roe, and Citizens United, I feel like it would be pretty tough to name a more destructive Supreme Court than John Roberts'
