Really interesting polling data here. Of course, this is the finding that especially stood out to me--about 80% of GOP county chairs endorse the "republic, not a democracy" meme that the John Birch Society tried to inject into the nation's political bloodstream in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

We talk about how old Dem officials are but the Republican judges are all old enough to remember this (esp. Reagan). This is a longstanding humiliation, not something new or specific to Trump. They believe checks on GOP presidents are inherently wrong, and they finally got the chance to codify that.

It was very traumatic for Republicans to have Nixon resign in disgrace & then 13 years later have Reagan close to being impeached (what saved him as much as anything was an implicit "he's too senile to have been knowingly involved" argument). Partisan hacks like Roberts have never forgotten this.
