Project 2025 treats climate science - not climate change - as the problem that must be solved. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/what-manda...
Project 2025 will double down on protections for fossil fuel industries while killing clean power initiatives, while this is going on, but the media is mostly focused elsewhere for some idiotic reason www.theguardian.com/environment/...

With light rail extending into Shoreline and Snohomish County, the Interurban Trail could become an even more invaluable connection for getting around without a car. But there's a half mile gap standing in the way, and bike advocates are on the case. www.theurbanist.org/2024/07/08/a...

Lots of flux in France today. The latest: —Macron asked Attal to stay PM until new gov emerges. —Left says it should govern. Says it'll propose name of a PM in coming days. Alliance sticking (for now?) —At least some Macronists have proposed alliance with conservatives (LR).

in light of today’s results, this quote from last week stands out
THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.
This!! Start with “they want to end no fault divorce, sell national parks, and ban porn” end with tax structure.

PS: I'm getting a lot of questions about 'what's next.' Well, everyone is jumping into the unknown here. But let me know what questions you have by replying here—I'll try to answer to what I can later!
Before I step away for a bit: It's been really fun to see thousands of you care so much about the weeds of how the French elections work today, and in recent weeks! I know most of my timeline knows me for U.S. politics, but it's fun to find an audience to share all this too!

Damn. Imagine voting strategically to prevent the worst possible outcomes…
Le Pen's party (RN) got 143 seats. While a record, that's far (very far) from the 289 they hoped for to govern. How?! Hundreds of Left & Macronist candidates dropped out to help each other block the RN. And millions of voters then voted strategically to get that job done.

Lot of questions about why Macron called snap elections. One clear factor: By ordering speed campaign, he expected Left could not unite, & so they'd be knocked out in Round 1, helping his own party. Instead, Left united within days—& now surged to win biggest bloc in Assembly.

What could have happened today if more candidates who came in 3rd had refused to drop out? Hint of an answer in the city of Aix. Here, the Macronist candidate refused to drop out. As a result, no front vs the far-right. Result: RN wins with 37%. Left at 36%. Macronists 27%.

Let’s start with: In France, president runs the show… as long as their party controls the Assembly. If presidential party loses that control, the president has few domestic powers—no veto, for instance. This isn’t a US-style split government. That’s why stakes today so high.

France is holding its parliamentary elections today. Clear stakes: Will far-right end up governing France? And if it fails, what possible coalition will end up governing given fragmentation? You can follow me for results starting at 2pm ET; but a quick context 🧵:

Here we go: I prepared a spreadsheet to follow today's French elections, district by district. We already know results of 91 out of 577 districts. Rest will come in starting at 2pm ET. Open it + bookmark it and follow along as calls come in! Here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Question for people who are following my France coverage: what level of district coverage would you be into tomorrow? Say, no promises, I cleaned up and made public my google spreadsheet of all districts — so the count updates as calls come in. Enough interest in that?

Details reported in piece for those who can’t read it —Macron’s team mostly shrugged off results on Sunday. They started celebrating a birthday as returned still coming in —He didn’t bother watching as Prime Minister, Attal, gave forceful speech calling to block far-right. (1/?)
Explosive reporting in Le Monde confirms what was apparent all week: Macron resisted the emergence of anti-far-right front after round 1. His PM, Attal, forced it as a fait accompli, & pressured for drop outs to block RN. Even then, Macron made some phone calls to undercut it.

The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared

The fact that Trump is actually weakly attempting to pretend he doesn’t back Project 2025 = EXACTLY why you need to be telling everyone you know about their evil, violent plans.
Don't let his lies scare you out of sharing the details of Project 2025 with everyone you know — especially those who are on the fence about their vote this year. There's good reason to believe knowing about Project 2025 focuses people's minds on the stakes. www.salon.com/2024/07/05/p...

"Executive Time" fell out of the coverage of Donald Trump in the most incredible way. Nobody writing about his quest to become president again ever mentions the fact that he hated the job when he had it and he couldn't and wouldn't really do it!

3 French polls out today…: Seat projections have: —Far-right (RN) 170 to 230 —Left 145 to 185 —Macronists 118 to 150 So: —Anti-RN front working better than expected, lowering RN. —Especially among left voters, which is saving Macronists. —New chance RN isn’t biggest group?
