Either the Democrats will run Biden, or he'll say he can't continue the campaign and Democrats will run Harris. Either is newsworthy, but neither is nearly as radical as running a pro-insurrection convicted felon with legal immunity he's eager to use.

Lots of bizarro world denialism on here about how concerning Biden's state and behavior were. "74 percent of voters view him as too old for the job, up five percentage points since the debate." www.nytimes.com/2024/07/03/u... 74%! 59% among Democrats!
I'm obviously not here to defend the NYT, but this notion that no one in the US knows what to think until the New York Times tells them is just so Bluesky-pilled. I had friends and family who couldn't care less about the NYT texting me during & after the debate like "gah what's wrong with Biden??"

The thing about Heritage and other MAGA goons is they're literally afraid to ride public transit and wet their pants a little anytime a car backfires. That's not to say they can't be scary, but let's keep in mind that they're also pathetic and there are only so many coked-up Proud Boys.

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

I started out thinking Biden had to stay in the race. Over the last week I've been persuaded the best path forward (there no *great* paths) for saving our democracy is for Biden to step down and for Kamala Harris to take over. This should be soon. Harris will carry forward the #BidenBoom.
To hell with the New York Times, but I don't think these concerns are manufactured. Progressive spaces like TNR and Zeteo expressed immediate concern about Biden after the debate. But so did Never-Trump allies. The move to seriously grapple with stepping down is broad and organic.

when you vote for President you are voting for a coalition rather than a person. the right understands this very well, which is why evangelicals lined up behind Trump.

It seems grim right now so try to imagine a Heritage Foundation staffer sobbing on the phone with their mom because Trump just lost another election. Feels good. And it can still happen. It's July.

This is one of the most dystopian signs I've ever seen. Republicans are quickly turning this country into an unrecognizable freakshow.

People should at least acknowledge that the concerns about Biden's viability are being expressed not just by shitty pundits and editorial boards but by Democratic lawmakers, Democratic donors and Democratic pollsters.

A teeny-tiny upside to Trump being awarded the powers of a monarch: Jack Smith could now take all the evidence he's gathered regarding Trump's criminality and, according to legal experts, present it at hearings before the election. www.salon.com/2024/07/02/a...

You can see political content on Threads, all you gotta do is change the setting. No, it's not on Threads, the setting's on Instagram. No, not the website, you have to get the app and change it there. Yeah no it's under "account." Oh and you have to keep doing this because it reverts back whenever.

The Supreme Court ruling on absolute immunity gives the president "something like the immunity that a king in England would have enjoyed," says @rickhasen.bsky.social on this pod. "And that immunity is great power."
Frightening @rickhasen.bsky.social take on SCOTUS ruling and second Trump term: "The opportunity for him to commit crime has been vastly expanded...this opinion does a lot of damage to the rule of law." On the pod, we go deep into how SCOTUS has unshackled Trump: newrepublic.com/article/1833...

I guess we'll see, but why would anyone think this Supreme Court would uphold Trump's 34 felony convictions? The former president's lawyers argue those convictions are based, in part, on testimony about a White House meeting. Are we to think that's not good enough for Sam Alito?

President Joe Biden on Monday ripped the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity, which ruled that presidents have an absolute immunity from prosecution for core official acts, and issued a stern warning over a possible second term for former President Donald Trump.

Easy to lose sight of the significance here, but the sitting president just gave a speech condemning the Supreme Court for a ruling that expands presidential power. It’s also a president who stands to benefit from this ruling, given that his opponent is vowing to imprison him and his family.

“What makes you so confident you should be president?” is an actual question a reporter shouted at the incumbent who just warned about a reckless court decision that imperils democracy

The 14th Amendment says if you were involved in an insurrection you can't be president. SCOTUS said they won't allow anyone to enforce that because of reasons they made up. The Constitution doesn't say the president is immune from criminal law. SCOTUS decided he is because of reasons they made up.
