It is comically irresponsible how the news media claims Trump is a "changed man" and "somber" and "serene" and "adopting a new tone"

Without knowing much, it seems worth asking whether the totally speculative storyline (that Dem political rhetoric inspired the PA shooter and untold others) might have played a role in the police decision to use deadly force here.
Avatar
There’s a lot of responses to this, and rather than responding individually I’ll say: I know cops shoot people for lots of different reasons, often racism; I wouldn’t be surprised if the speculative notion that the assassin was radicalized by MSNBC or whatever has given cops a hair trigger.

Breaking news: President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.
Biden set to announce support for major Supreme Court changeswww.washingtonpost.com The president has discussed the plans with constitutional scholars and members of Congress in recent weeks.

I think the more accurate statement is that we don’t know if there’s any truth to it, but that seemed to be the consensus media storyline the past 48 hours. The precise question is whether the police bought into that. That seems highly plausible to me.

Just a reminder: Trump inherited the lowest homicide rate of any president in 50 years. He was the first president in 30 years to leave office with a higher homicide rate than when he entered. And the rate has dropped every year since he left. www.foxnews.com/video/635815...

I hate them, and their money does create a real threat, but the silver lining is that Marc Andreesen, Elon Musk etc make clear that this election pits the billionaire assholes and their marks against the rest of us.

Every picture of JD Vance looks like he was cooked up in a test tube by a law professor who wrote a best seller rebranding child abuse as ethnic superiority

I think any causal connection between Democratic political rhetoric and this 20-year-old shooter seems totally speculative verging on unlikely at this point. So blaming the rhetoric seems misplaced. At the same time many Trump haters have *reacted* to the shooting by celebrating the violence.
Avatar
I hate Trump. I think the celebration of the assassination attempt is disgusting and politically idiotic. Want to cede our ground as the side that opposes political violence? Some are sprinting to that position.
Avatar
I have 20~ followers here so it doesn’t mean much, but I’ve chosen to unfollow some accounts I otherwise liked, like Coach Finstock for instance. I encourage others to do the same. We should shun those who celebrate violence because it’s against our principles and it’s fucking stupid.

Trump doesn’t think it’s an insult when someone calls him America’s Hitler. He loves it.
What does JD Vance really think of Donald Trump? "He's America's Hitler . . . Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us . . . I find him reprehensible. God wants better of us.” www.washingtonpost.com/elections/20...
The not-so-kind things J.D. Vance said about Trump before he was VP pickwww.washingtonpost.com Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, but that wasn’t always the case for the former president’s new running mate.
Avatar
it's not that he's changed his mind about trump, really. it's more that he's changed his mind about hitler.
I get that he’s taken it all back, including when he said he feared Trump would be America’s Hitler, but I guess my position is… I have never gone to work for someone I’ve ever in any point in my life compared directly to Adolf Hitler… and it’s a fair question… www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

I think this begs the question (am I using it right?): Did Vance’s opinion on whether Trump is an “American Hitler” change or did Vance’s opinion on whether an American Hitler would be bad change?

JD Vance 2016: Trump is America's Hitler (pejorative) JD Vance 2024: Trump is America's Hitler (complimentary)

Trump’s VP pick also once called Trump “America’s Hitler”
Trump’s VP pick … — demanded the DOJ open a criminal investigation of a journalist for “insurrection” over an op-ed critical of Trump — spouted replacement theory garbage — called for criminal prosecutions of other Trump critics — blamed Biden for Trump shooting — called for Biden’s prosecution

I can’t imagine any more effective message about Vance. To him, Trump is America’s Hitler, and he’s on board. Also, from Trump’s perspective, Trump clearly doesn’t mind that Vance called him Hitler. That’s how Trump knows Vance gets him.
Avatar
One of the few good things about Vance is that where lots of folks are inclined to treat Trump as a bit of a clown and not take his words at face value (which is baffling, but it is what it is), JD Vance's words are serious, sound serious, and more people will hear them as literal claims of intent

… “I don’t know that I can disrespect someone more than J. D. Vance” —Romney
FWIW I just read McKay Coppins’ Romney book, and Romney is BRUTAL on JD Vance.

I don't know if Dems are capable of using this--it was gullible coastal liberals who propped him up after all--but speaking from experience because these are my people: there is a genuine, longstanding streak of loathing for J.D. Vance in the Appalachia/Ozarks Scots-Irish belt, the real hillbillies.

JD Vance going from 'Trump is America's Hitler and that's why I oppose him' to 'Trump is America's Hitler and that's why I'm running to be his Vice President' -- truly, what an arc
Avatar
Here’s the thing about the Vance pick: it’s probably unhelpful in electoral terms. But, in terms of governance, it’s further evidence that they’re Going For It. Trump 1 was hobbled in his authoritarian attempt by the admin and GOP. Trump 2 will be aided by both. They’re gonna go for it.
