I devoted a decent chunk of my life to the 18th century and have long said that Americans basically overstate the powers of George III, he wasn't fucking Louis XIV, and the presidency still retains a lot of George III powers. Except the US president is now Louis XIV.

I spent a summer in Beijing a couple of years after Tiananmen. Most of the people I interacted with seemed fairly happy. Also, they held a mass execution in a soccer stadium and who the hell knows if they were guilty or just pissed off the wrong people.

Of all the things people are saying the Democrats/Biden should do to make sure he wins in November, the least controversial is to talk about abortion rights over and over and over and over... Appeals to abstract notions of democracy are great but abortion access is how we maintain democracy.

Feels like a sliver of a silver lining here is people maybe figuring out they like a king LESS than they like Trump, and that voting for Trump is voting for a Shit King

Gotta say, even my largely politics-is-not-for-me relatives on Facebook are having a fucking conniption over the SCOTUS ruling. My uncle posted "We left England because we don't want a King. Charles is an inbred." I'm not sure what one has to do with the other, but he's right.

Indeed, American Black people HAVE had very recent, living memory experience of being subject to an authoritarian US regime. It would be wise to listen to them.

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”
