My father's best friend died today, a year and a half after Dad died, and they were so close for so long that it's like losing Dad again. 💔

One thing that anti-woke “comedy” is good for is exposing differentiators between normal decent people, for whom freedom is simply the right to exist without being dehumanized and bullied, and conservatives, for whom freedom is mostly the right to dehumanize and bully others.

Are you driving to Glastonbury on the A303 this week? As you pass Stonehenge on your left, please take time to ponder its timeless message. The message is that you’re going the wrong way. Stonehenge should be on your right.

I unloaded my daughter's college dorm room and got everything relocated in just two (2) trips with my Subaru Crosstrek. And she had a LOT of stuff in there. Not a cubic inch went unused.
Welcome to the Annual Most Dad* Thing You Did In The Last Year Thread. Per tradition, I will lead off: I bought a mitre saw almost entirely because it was on sale, and now I will find the thinnest excuse to incorporate it into any home project. *You need not have kids or identify as male to Dad.

I don't think people appreciate how bad things are in journalism and how terrible a blow it is to democracy. I have never seen the employment this iffy, wages this low, reporting this little in demand (by editors). You wonder how a column like Kathleen Parker's gets printed--that's who's left.

I'm 52. I try to point my kids (20 and 16, both v. politically engaged) to the people out there doing good things. But they are fewer and fewer these days, my cynicism is at a peak after walking away from my own 30+ yr career in news, and too often the logical conclusion is "it does all suck."
So this is getting written up & discussed as scandalous rather than recognizing the youth are having a rational reaction to the social, economic and political situations they're encountering.

We are all so atomised. And then an eclipse happens. And an aurora. And we all share something wonderful, however briefly. It's like back when there were only two channels and we all watched the same game, the same final, the same finale, again. More of this please, shared humanity, sharing wonder.

More than 50 years in Rochester and I have never seen the aurora like this. Wow!

A level of pettiness to which we can all aspire. Resident of Seaside, California was ordered to build a fence to hide from view the boat he parks next to his house. He complied.

This. So much this, filtered through the awful memory of how the scammers preyed on my dad in the early stages of his dementia. We could have a much better world if we wanted it.
It will always baffle me how we as a society have just let scammers ruin so many parts of our daily lives. We cannot take phone calls anymore, emails and texts are flooded with scams, and social media directs you to scam sites for everything from forever stamps to kids toys.

Nature’s first food is brain, Her hardest hue to gain Her early leaf’s a worm; But only while it squirms. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So brainworm sank to grief, When it’s in RFK. Nothing brain can stay.

It's obvious to everybody by now that universities are under attack by the far right same as k-12 schools, libraries, journalism, and the internet right? That this is a coordinated far right attack on our info worlds in attempt to rewrite our recent shared histories and equate truth with power?

You've probably been wondering: "How many eels is a cottage worth in 14th C. England?" This is a reasonable question. I get it.  And happily, I'm here to help! I included a chart showing this kind of equivalence in an article I wrote for History Extra, but here's an excerpt! 🧪🗃️

So, I'm not any kind of HR professional, but... if someone who's been at your org for 20 years just abruptly resigns, and if it's someone especially hard to replace... wouldn't you want to find out why and see if there's something going on that you might be able to fix?
