Remember how the "retail theft crime wave" disappeared as soon as companies had to do their annual reports? That's because it's illegal to lie to shareholders. AI is booming (if you're a pleb) but if you have money - Goldman Sachs will be honest with you instead web.archive.org/web/20240629...

Just to be really explicit about what’s happening here, the cover conflates age, physical disability, and cognitive disability, and goes on to conflate disability with unfitness for office. It’s utter bullshit.
IMO this is a straight-up ageist and ableist image, no?

We used to live around the block from Elizabeth Warren, and I personally witnessed her giving out full-size candy bars on Halloween, I’m just saying
My wife and I ran into her and her husband when our daughter was a newborn, and she was really touched when my wife told her how she was glad to have a role model for our daughter representing us. My wife came away from the interaction an even bigger fan.

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

Surely I am not the only one who remembers the time when “thought leaders” declared that massive online courses were our inevitable future.
No matter who says that these tools aren’t intended to replace teachers or how many times it’s said, that’s exactly what will happen. (Or it will be used as a justification for eliminating teacher jobs because now teachers can “grade” more efficiently) www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-t...

Right now there are 5,984,970 active accounts on Bluesky. And there’s one account who has blocked 1,135,239 of them. That is exactly the level of pettiness that I aspire to.

The fundamental fact with which one must get to grips upon first attempting to drive in Boston is that the streets are non-Euclidean This causes many difficulties

I can't tell you how many times I've had someone ask me where X street is and the answer is "you're on it." There are still some pretty awful signage gaps (I think especially along Memorial Drive).

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1,000 a month. Results showed that close to half of the participants secured housing, and nearly $600K saved in public service costs due to fewer ER visits & jail stays. They also saw improved mental health.

I mean, sure, but this advice is why (for example) most surveys are useless, phone banking for elections is less effective, and just plain ridiculous to have to do. Destroying a primary communication channel under a wave of fraud should cause more tumult that "just stop using your phone." Right?
The first rule of avoiding scam calls is to never answer unknown numbers, and even some known ones. Curious? Bored? Worried it’s an emergency? Wait the extra minute it takes for the call to go to voice mail, then decide if it’s legitimate.
Sick of scams? Stop answering your phone.www.washingtonpost.com Phone scams are still hugely popular — and they depend entirely on people curious enough to answer.

Men, and white cis men especially, talking openly about your pay to your coworkers is one of the best actions of workplace solidarity you can do for this very reason.
something I learned while still pretty junior was that if you only ever talk to other underrepresented people about pay, you get an idea of normal numbers, but who you really need to be talking to are the white guys. their numbers are completely different I am now very senior. It’s still true

OH MY GOD. “In fact, hair relaxers marketed to children in the United States have been found to contain the highest levels of five of the chemicals prohibited in the European Union.”
“A study that followed a cohort of nearly 34,000 women, found that those who frequently used chemical hair-straightening products, a majority of whom were Black women, were two and a half times as likely to develop uterine cancer as those who did not use the products.”
The Disturbing Truth About Hair Relaxerswww.nytimes.com They’ve been linked to reproductive disorders and cancers. Why are they still being marketed so aggressively to Black women?

This deadline was extended. Please act by June 30! Someone I know who did this just received a notice that 100% of their remaining debt was wiped. Not everyone will have those results, but I can't think of a situation in which it isn't worth doing.
If you or someone you know completely gave up paying student loans and are in default: the Fresh Start initiative deadline is very soon. Paired with SAVE, below, especially the changes for undergraduate borrowers (5% of discretionary income), it is the best opportunity that ever has existed

make no mistake, regional institutions losing programs like this eliminates access to opportunities for first gen college students and already underserved and excluded populations. and it's on purpose. the UNC system in particular has it out for their regional campuses, this is just the beginning
