I don’t want to generalize too much but the place I see the most hope right now is from those that have been fighting the hardest for the longest time. Extended doomerism can be a luxury not afforded to those who have the most to lose.

The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

Not all dichotomies are false, but the more emphatically someone presents something as a dichotomy, the more likely it is that they haven't thought the topic through. Or they *have* thought it through and are trying to distract *you* from thinking it through.

The library has a book sale earlier this week and I picked up a limited edition thesaurus for $2. I love being able to use physical books whenever possible. But when I got home and opened it up, it was entirely blank. I truly have no words to describe how mad I was.

New rule: I'm not going to take criticisms of activist tactics seriously when they come from people who - as far as I can tell - aren't doing anything other than criticizing. Don't tell me that things should be done differently, tell me how you *are* doing things differently.

I notice again how often preemptive defensiveness - e.g. "This will be unpopular but ..." - precedes statements that are pretty common and sometimes even the *most* common opinion. Their oh-so-brave stance is often the safest one, despite the fact that they might be - yikes - disagreed with.
