while i am at it, i don’t think it is necessarily true that a woman of color is predestined to lose a presidential election, but i think attempting it under these circumstances and in this time frame takes a bar that’s already higher than it has ever been and doubles it
she is an extraordinary leader but this asks her to pull off the greatest feat in the history of american presidential campaigns with basically four months to do it
"Can Kamala do it" is a fine question, but we are also obligated to ask ourselves "can we collectively get our misogynoir under control for the next four months". Individuals have very limited control over national politics, but we could all interrogate our own "a woman but not that one" tendencies.
Given how much of the post-debate hysteria was "how can we replace Biden with literally anyone but the one person constitutionally mandated to replace him, anyone but her, because reasons," I think we have our answer on the misogynoir question.
I guess that's also why Pres. Biden gave the wrong answer when asked about his age. The *right* answer was: "If I have a medical emergency, I have an awesome VP to take over. If DJT does, you get whatever random sycophant the RNC enlists as your president."
And if Biden is as far along as the panic suggests, a vote for Biden is a vote for Harris anyways. Doesn’t seem like much reason for her to blow up the party to get there anyways.
ngl tho, part of me is also at least somewhat hopeful that we got all the unabashed electoral women hating out of our systems in 2016, and I kinda sorta think that, on some level, Hillary *had* to lose in order to allow some other woman to eventually do it.
Tho I've also seen a bunch of woman-hating Bernie Bros poking their wretched heads out today and deigning to tut-tut to us about WHY their Hillary hatred is still justified today because those complaints about SCOTUS were *threats!!*, don't you know? So maaaaaybe some of us aren't past it quite yet.
I'm afraid the only way to beat those guys is to keep pushing. The sexism on both the right and the left is still stunning, and the misogynoir is off the charts. I try to be hopeful, but increasingly find it impossible.
So this is part of why I think the only way a switch only works if Biden resigns and she runs as an incumbent. Which is insane, I know, but wouldn't the tight timeline kind of work for her? It feels like the hate machine would need time to retool the message.
With 70+% of voters saying Biden is in no state to be president right now, we are running for the first woman president anyway. It's just ambiguous whether it is Jill Biden or Kamala Harris, and that ambiguity is not going to be making that run easier.
After that Vanity Fair disaster, Kalama it is?
I've said from the start that if they really wanted to get Biden to step down, they needed to come out strong for her simultaneously and signal that they would rally around her. They pretty clearly showed that they wouldn't.
It doesn't bode well for the insistence on norms, ethics, and rule of law team if we're chucking out the VP for some personality, some messiah, some divine wind, some savior, etc.
It's magical thinking.
And if the press wants to say that Harris is not viable because she's too unpopular, they might want to ask why that is and if they had anything to do with it.
Definitely, but that won't happen now or until years later. Similar temporal constraints and concerns on checking and balancing a king imo. No willingness to admit fault or error. Absolutism will be the death of us.
And if they actually had some divine savior, there'd actually be one name thrown out instead of a list of five or six people that basically says "I have no concrete idea, any white person will do."
Every time I hear someone saying Biden must step down, my answer is always, "For who? And how do they get selected for the nomination? And how do you know they'll do better?"
Then you have a conversation, not magic hoping.
At my camping weekend, someone wanted Newsom and we went back and forth about it, but at least that's concrete.
i'm against biden stepping down, it's too risky...as far as Harris goes her polling is due in part to the media again, but that being said she's great in debates & would tear Trump apart
If I were him I'd declare her illegitimate, her candidacy undemocratic, & refuse to have a thing to do with her. Treat her as subhuman scum, & claim anyone who said I did it for inappropriate reasons is a woke race-baiter. The gameplan for Kamala is child's play. Trump wouldn't lose a step.
I had/have said for a long time that electing a woman is a bigger hill than a black guy, an atheists, etc.
The number of people who quietly don't like "woman" as their boss is HUGE, and they say it out loud.
Especially because you know that if she were to fail, future candidates will be turned aside because "the incumbent VP couldn't beat a fascist felon, what chance do you have?" Assuming we get future candidates at all, something which is by no means certain if trump wins.
It's not just that "she is an extraordinary leader but this asks her to pull off the greatest feat in the history of american presidential campaigns with basically four months to do it" but also that the New York Times has repeatedly shivved her before and eagerly will do it over and over.
Beating Trump is obviously job 1 but absent clear unassailable evidence (not one or even a series of polls w/i margin of error) that Harris stands a markedly better chance I’m not down with swapping out at all because I don’t trust a new administration with the gains of this one.
Kamala doesn't have that "gravitas" to impress me. Her performance as VP as been underwhelming. I'm also very concerned about the high turnover among her staff. That said, I'd MUCH rather have her as President than the law flouting carrot top.
How was Harris' performance as VP underwhelming compared to previous VPs. Did Pence do more? Quayle? Mondale? Hell, did Biden?
The VP has two Constitutional duties, and Kamala Harris holds the record for one of them (breaking ties in the Senate). So what performance are you talking about?
