Was Minority Report the movie where they wiped people's memories clean? I feel like that's what's happened in U.S. culture more generally over the past several years. And I think it's accelerating. Anyone else relate to this?
Avatar
I definitely feel like cultural amnesia is accelerating and collective memory is breaking down. I think capitalism has learned to force what used to be organic cultural cycles of forgetting into faster and faster timeframes so it can sell us the same shit again sooner.

I’d argue it also shows how ruling class solidarity even trumps the profit motive.

If your response after that sampling of concrete actions you could take is still 'i don't know what to do,' then you need to do other work to figure out what your actual block to taking action is. It might not be that you don't know what to do but that there are other types of blocks for you.

Here's the though: There is no way that the Deadpool and Wolverine movie can deliver what everybody needs it to deliver. Internet nerds are really setting themselves up for disappointment with this one. This movie is gonna be mid as hell, and in their hearts everybody knows that.

I was worried flying halfway across the country wearing my kufieya. Seeing all the hate and vitriol from Zionists all over the world would discourage a lot of people. I'm happy to say that I received nothing but compliments since entering the airport […] [Original post on toot.majorshouse.com]

Me when I started talking and working more in the realm of anti-oppression. Now no one with VP titles will take photos with me lol
Evan here, This may be true of some, but me? I knowingly torched any option of ever working for the New York Times by starting an independent trans news site best known for the times I call them on their anti-trans shit.

Tech folks who make north of $200,000 do not like the words "colonialism" used next to things like "Fortune 500"

fwiw, I think there is a whole contingent of Media People online who will defend other Media People because they see their own career aspirations in jeopardy if the consensus becomes “working for the New York Times raises ethical questions”

friendly reminder that if you see people on here sneeringly saying things like “all these ‘activists’ do is post,” a great way to respond is by muting or blocking them, going about your business, and allowing them to continue believing they’re right. don’t be baited into snitching on yourself.

So saying that Tressie or Jamelle leaving doesn’t “make or break this place” communicates to me that the person’s definition of success doesn’t consider Black users as a whole. Which, good luck with that given what we know about how things become widely popular 4/?
Avatar
Platform migration only works as a collective process. Entire groups and demos must move to make a place successful. Someone, usually thought-leaders and trend-setters, can sign off that a place is legit. Imagine all the users who have left or never joined b/c of the reputation being formed here 3/?
Avatar
Bouie may no longer be the “young” I mean here, but consider, when ordinary Black users see people they look up to and respect like Tressie, Jamelle, and Lydia flea because of harassment and racism, are they inspired to think this is a worthy or cool place for them? 2/?
Avatar
Saw someone’s take is “Bouie not being here won’t make or break” this site. I am happy to say some things about how platform migration works. It’s true, one user never makes or breaks anything, but for U.S. users the presence of young Black folks has driven the popularity of new tech for decades 1/?
Avatar
One more thing. This is why so many Black users have stayed on X despite, long before the discourse noticed his awfulness, having nicknamed Musk “Apartheid Clyde.” People go where their people are, they migrate for community. (I know “community” has been a hard to grasp concept on here.)

It's still my birthday so I'm going to ask you to do me a favour, okay? Stop right now & take 5 deep breaths, as deep as you can, pressing your held breaths down into your diaphragm before releasing. Do it like this: Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, out for 4 seconds. Got it? Five times

Remember when Thiel y combinator et al were “listening” and pushing money around culture And folks told people who questioned that to “calm down” and get the bag And that we shouldn’t question all the orgs jumping into tech spaces that didn’t acknowledge previous critics?

What are people doing w/neighbors & friends to create & nurture networks of collective care & mutual aid? What small but significant (or super size me and spectacular, and everything in between) actions & practices are people talking about, preparing for, or taking?
Avatar
We went old school- made up flyers, went door to door on our block, then adjacent ones. Invited folks to opt in to a text chain. I know which neighbors I can count on. We gather at Nno which neighbors renamed National Night for collective liberation. Something goes down we have a network.

gotta love how contemporary publishing is 30000000 beautiful, deeply felt, finely crafted books with 7.5 readers each whose authors are just barely making a living, and like 4 books that financially support the whole apparatus, each of which has comprehensively and unforgivably destroyed society

I realized very quickl after I joined here, that this was not going to be the digital reprieve turned launch pad for *actionable* solidarity (Romancelandia excepted cause it always travels with its own oxygen. People were here to brunch and mock and meme, not organize. It's tradition by now.

this can't be fought with an algorithm. it's a big social issue and it requires intentional community building. I think some form of this can be done online, despite elder wisdom as a post-dial-up digital native, but it has to be intentional, de-gamified and NOT PUBLIC

As I said, it was immediately clear Bluesky wasn't about that life. Even as a walled garden it had fash all up and through it, and now it vacillates between shrill nihilism, performative solidarity, and every flavor of anti-Blackness imaginable.
