The last couple visitors to our house have announced their arrival by texting me and waiting at the front door, where there's a working doorbell in plain view. Is this a thing now? Is ringing the doorbell now considered a rude and obsolete practice, like placing voice calls?

Does anyone know why I can buy kindle editions of every Culture novel except Excession? Is there a weird situation with the rights on that one?

They do not. And the reason I know they don't is that they're fighting hard to delay every criminal proceeding as much as they're able.

Blackthorne: Tell him his excuses fool no one, and that anyone with eyes to see understands that he clearly intended Jack Torrance as a self-insert, and Kubrick's portrayal of him as a volatile abuser from the start touched a nerve. Mariko: The Anjin is upset about The Shining.

I imagine that women with multiple children over the age of 15 who are married to the authors of reviews about Haberman's 2022 book about DT are all relieved that one of their number was excused from the jury. Thanks to NYT, it would have been a bumpy year for all of them.

This is driving me nuts. The haptics on BlueSky on my pixel 8 have suddenly gone all mushy. When I like a post, it feels like I accidentally crushed a mosquito. I hate hate hate this and I can't figure out what happened.

For the last few weeks I've been working with Chris Barkley @cmzhang42.bsky.social of @file770.bsky.social on a report about censorship in the 2023 Hugo Awards. Leaked emails and files indicate authors and works deemed “not eligible” for the awards were removed due to political considerations. 1/3

New from me: Here's the second part of my three-part series looking at how Coleman Hughes, Bari Weiss's Free Press, and a propagandistic documentary attempt to retroactively exonerate Derek Chauvin.

Gonna be fun watching the folks from Twitter that have gotten used to rage farming learning the Bluesky culture of “Fuck off, I’m just gonna block you and remove this problem for both of us.”

So, as we prepare for Bluesky's own version of The Endless September, a few suggestions: 1. Welcome new folks and be awesome to them; 2. Instill in them the gospel of "Don't Engage, Just Block" when it comes to trolls and bots; 3. Remember "DE;JB" yourself and keep your own timeline groovy.
Bluesky is now open for anyone to join | TechCrunchtechcrunch.com Bluesky looks and functions like Twitter at the outset, but the platform stands out because of what lies under the hood.

It’s only fascism if it’s exactly like 1930s Europe, otherwise it’s just sparkling far right, hyper-nationalist populism that deploys antisemitic & racist propaganda in defense of a nostalgic concept of the traditional patriarchal family supposedly besieged by culturally-foreign & degenerate others.

People like to ask me “who’ll win in 2024,” and it’s pretty simple: Biden will announce a new COVID lockdown and activate his illegal immigrant shock troops to suppress the MAGA vote in November, then resign so the electoral college can appoint Michelle Obama.

When the enormity of the world's horrors makes you feel helpless, narrow your focus. Find one stranger and scold them for posting a recipe while kids are dying. Call out a new mom for not adding alt text to a baby photo. Critique a selfie. Correct a joke. Show people you care more than them.
