"Seatbelts, air bags and other safety features protect us when we travel in cars. When we’re *not* in cars, we rely on a safe street environment to prevent and mitigate crashes. Snatching away safe speed limits is as unthinkable as taking away our seatbelts." A great piece by Christina Robertson.

Some of the stuff this coalition is doing well be relatively easily undone. Some will be expensive and take thought. But the signaling to society that "expertise doesn't matter" may take a generation to fully unwind.

Can I just point out that the accelerating pollution of the information commons makes the few remaining human-curated projects like Wikipedia even more valuable, and that’s why I relentlessly encourage people to double down on improving it.
Depressing that the entire promise of the internet was once that we would have all the world's information at our fingertips, and genAI has, in a very short space of time, completely nullified that idea.

This STINKS! The cronies, with numerous conflicts of interest, paid $1200/day, are appointed to decide without scrutiny, which projects will be fast-tracked. The list of projects was not made available to anyone to consider in their submissions www.thepost.co.nz/politics/350... #nzpol

It says everything you need to know about the British media that the Greens winning 4 seats is a curiosity and their interview questions have been about their message not getting through but according to them Reform winning an identical number of seats is a stunning underdog achievement.

☑️ Told Simeon Brown what I think of his petty, wasteful, costly, and unsafe speed limit proposals. You have until 11 July to do the same. Get on it! #nzpol consult.transport.govt.nz/policy/setti...

"This evidence I don't like is ideology" says the minister who for vibes-based reasons is also forcing local government to reverse locally-supported evidence-based speed limit reductions.

We’ve been saying for a long time how small the population of TERFs is…
Count Binface got 308 votes Posie Parker got 196 votes Ergo, bins are more popular than terfs

The Heritage Foundation “don’t make us kill you, Democrats” statement may mark one of those moments people will read about in 100 years (hopefully!) and think to themselves “why didn’t they freak out when they heard the extremists say that?” (Sadly, it’s just not how humans work most of the time)
That Heritage Foundation statement threatening a violent revolution against the left = that moment in a movie in which the forces of evil loudly announce their evil plans. except in real life, unlike in a movie, most normal people don’t even realize this has *happened* (which is our job).

Through my childhood, on election nights, my dad was the man under Peter Snow’s desk putting interesting facts on notecards into his socks. That’s how it was done before Google, kids. You got a very clever ASD man with some Oxford degrees to just remember interesting constituency histories.

Nature can be rather disturbing at times, but amazing too! Here are a couple of examples of entomopathogenic fungi I've seen across New Zealand - that's fungi which infect and kill invertebrates (yep, 'The Last of Us' style). Can you tell what the unfortunate hosts were? #Entomology 🧪

Perfect summary. Worth a read if you want to understand Luxon and his mates. It’s not exactly equal to this (because USA) but the same basic processes apply if you met Kings/Grammar boys circa the 80s to 90s. I have a large collection of horror stories. TW: Discussions of sexual assault #nzpol
In "How Men Like Donald Trump, Brett Kavanaugh, And Brock Turner Are Made," writer Amelia Mavis Christnot explores the roots of toxic masculinity and privilege. From Ivy League halls to positions of power, see how entitlement shapes behavior and fuels impunity. A powerful read.
