Imagine being a reporter/writer for major news that has said "The GOP doesn't really want to ban all abortions, expel all migrants, nor overthrow democracy" and then watch the GOP nominate a guy who has said explicitly "We 100% want to ban all abortions, expel migrants, and overthrow democracy"

Here’s the thing about the Vance pick: it’s probably unhelpful in electoral terms. But, in terms of governance, it’s further evidence that they’re Going For It. Trump 1 was hobbled in his authoritarian attempt by the admin and GOP. Trump 2 will be aided by both. They’re gonna go for it.

If you want access to free books, please get a library card. In the US, the more people there are with library cards, the more funding libraries have access to. Libraries provide more than books. They are a community resource. As an author and reader, I support libraries! #books #libraries

Just in general a lot of people in the US act out of an impulse to be "in charge." So across the spectrum you see people making demands on people they’re not in actual relationship with and lashing out when people simply refuse to accept their apparent authority.

Something people are sleeping on: One of the 4 state justices who voted to make abortion illegal in Iowa in late June, David May, is up for retention this fall. This was a 4-3 decision. One of 3 states in which justices who upheld bans this year are up: boltsmag.org/your-state-b...

The undermining of the IRS was a form of sabotage of basic state administrative functioning. Expect much more of this under a second Trump term.
The IRS reported this week they collected $1 BILLION in taxes owed by rich tax cheats thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act funding that provided them the additional staffing to pursue these cases. First up on the GOP agenda for the next administration is gutting the IRS.

Miracles are real and they are provided by science I am in tears. we can *prevent HIV transmission*.
Lenacapavir did so well at preventing HIV infection that it hit the threshold where the only ethical thing to do was stop the randomized trial and immediately offer it to literally every participant. That's huge news. www.npr.org/sections/goa...
A new way to prevent HIV delivers dramatic results in trialwww.npr.org The testing of lenacapavir was halted because results were so impressive — 100% effectiveness. The decision was made to give all participants the injection rather than the alternative daily pill.

Today's Supreme Court has built its enormous power, in part, on the idea that it is more independent & impartial than the political branches because it does not answer to public opinion. But that view would have shocked 19th c Americans (most of whom already feared such a strong judiciary). 5/

It cannot be stressed enough that adjusting the size of the Supreme Court in the 19th c. was a serious solution to serious concerns about how the Court functioned. As @earlymodjustice.bsky.social points out, reform often addressed imbalances. And these imbalances were often about REPRESENTATION. 1/
Seven times between 1801 and 1869 Congress changed the size of the court, going from a low of five justices in 1801 to a high of ten in 1863. In most of those cases, as in 1801 and 1863, the size went up and down in order to fix an imbalance or overreach by the Supreme Court. My latest
The Case for Expanding the Supreme Court Has Never Been Strongernewrepublic.com Biden has repeatedly refused to endorse “court-packing.” The right-wing justices’ ruling on presidential immunity ought to change his mind.

When the american liberals use France's election as an illustration of the need to VOTE, they ignore that people were not only voting against the far right but *for* something. They voted for a campaign which promises to: increase minimum wage, lower retirement age, pay for all childcare, etc
