Just a reminder: it’s good to oppose assassinations. But you are under absolutely no obligation to treat Trumpists and Trump-apologists as people who are honest, or acting in good faith, when they purport to condemn political violence or violent rhetoric. They’re not sincere.
If there was a shooter, then whoever the shooter was, I presume we’ll have the usual plague of hasty prior-fluffing misidentifications from Reddit and the more marginal pundits.
Quick points:
1) Assassination attempts are bad, period.
2) We do not know the motives of the shooter.
2) We do not know the political consequences of this event. There were attempts to shoot Teddy Roosevelt, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter shortly before elections; they all survived and lost.
Popping on to say:
A lot of rumors are about to fly about this rally. Trump's team is 100% going to try and take advantage of this situation. So will malicious foreign actors/bots/etc.
Please don't auto share. Check your sources, and vet their wording/sourcing carefully.
Joe Biden has done 9 public events and counting since last Thursday. The Stephanopoulos interview will be 10. At a certain point the “gotta get Biden out there” ppl are just telling us that they aren’t looking and aren’t interested in looking.
for me the Biden conversation is entirely about whether he can win in November. i’m not worried about whether he can actually do the job because i don’t think it’s a real job.
I don't actually think the DNC is all that responsible for Clinton or Biden being the nominee. Primary voters genuinely thought they were the strongest candidate to beat Trump!
I don’t know if we should be looking at this from a “luck” standpoint. There were, and are, plenty of candidates that would crush Trump. These are DNC decisions that are…questionable at best being generous to them.
Respectfully: If you're on Bluesky right now screaming that Pride Month will be abolished, Trump will be declared king, America is forever ruined:
Log off.
You are entitled to your feelings, and it's better to let them out than not. But *Do Not Do Death Magic On The Emotional Contagion App.*
95% of the “Biden must step aside” argument rests on wishcasting a perfect storm: Biden steps down gracefully, there’s minimal fallout for Dems, Kamala steps aside, a talented young gun steps in and performs well. It’s not impossible but to act like it’s a layup is nuts.
An underrated possible future is that in a few months time Donald Trump loses the election and then spends the rest of his life in court and in jail for his many crimes. Like, this could definitely be how things go
Not that I'd expect this to happen, but if Biden wins but Rs win majorities in Congress and it's clear they have the numbers and intent to try to do a certification coup, then Capitol and DC security should be given orders to deny them entry. Convene rump Congress without them and vote to expel.
Like, in the US, solar is doubling year on year. In the UK coal is *gone* from the energy mix, and renewables have ~ taken over *gas*. These things are new, and they are very large, but they also seem to get essentially no credit or coverage, which is ... not great if you want progress to continue
If you have the opportunity to take a job for a truly evil employer, it seems like the most ethical choice is counterintuitively but clearly to accept it and do it as poorly as possible rather than to turn it down.
