Hot take: I'm truly not interested in hand wringing over how much people will miss enjoying the books of men who have turned out to be abusers. I'm far more concerned about the missing art that women haven't been able to create/publish because they crossed paths with such men.

Oh yeah, I guess it's the 10th anniversary of The Wicked and The Divine #1, innit. Ten years! A lifetime. Five lifetimes, if you're a god.

Plus! A bunch of Jewy Juneteenth resources!
As it turns out, the business with the donkey is the least interesting part of the Balaam story. What DOES matter is all the ways it can teach us about dehumanization -- and what it takes for us to be the kind of people who refuse to go along with it. Who turn curses into blessings. My latest:

Recall a time when someone came to your aid, stood up for you, showed you an unexpected kindness. Hold on to those memories, for they are dear. Strive every day to make someone else feel the way you did in that moment.

This is a thing I think about a lot: the asymmetry of expectation, and who is expected to be sensitive to whose feelings and observe which norms. Autistic people are trained to ignore their own wellness and instincts for the ease of non-Autistic people, and there's no reciprocal accommodation.
“Participants felt social skills training [SST] helped them learn more about their autism, but sometimes they were being told to hide parts of themselves. Participants also suggested that everyone would benefit from SST, whether or not they are autistic.” www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/...
“Just Ask What Support We Need”: Autistic Adults' Feedback on Social Skills Training | Autism in Adulthoodwww.liebertpub.com Background: Social skills training (SST) is an intervention intended to support the development of social communication and interaction for autistic people, often through role-play, modeling, peer med...

sorry to be a spoiler but there is no way around a genuinely socially responsible AI without directly tackling systemic inequalities and building accountability mechanisms on the current concentration of power in the hands of big corps/AI companies

and this literally ties into costumers' fight for equal pay in this year's IATSE negotiations The Costume Designers Guild is 87% female, with more than 20% of members identifying as LGBTQ, and 45% lower on the IATSE pay scale than male-dominated creative department heads (per the Guild).
For anyone who feels like complaining about the Met Gala, it exists because the museum doesn’t deign to fund the Costume Institute like it funds literally every other collection in the place. It’s the only area that has to self-fund. The Gala is how it does that.

Palestinians & Israeli leftists have a lot of experience with rubber bullets. They're classified as "nonlethal" & the name makes it sound like they're like Nerf darts. They're not. They are rubber-coated solid metal. They frequently cause permanent injury & not infrequently kill. This is madness.
At UCLA this morning, police are shooting rubber bullets at students peacefully protesting genocide. Beyond heinous.

In retrospect, the phenomenon of black school leaders punishing black students for celebrating during their graduation walks feels like the warning shot for what we’re seeing across the country right now. Punishing joy comes right before punishing protest and eventually punishing existence.
