I hate to go UHHH THIS IS JUST LIKE [FICTIONAL THING I LIKE] with real world horrors--because it is exhausting and often misses the actual problems at hand--but truly one of the absolute best ways I've ever seen anyone explain the truth of this is in Pratchett's Going Postal.
A hill I will die on: all white-collar crimes are violent crimes. It's just that the violence is removed from the perpetrator because the perpetrator is wealthy.

These “we did a trial run of UBI and all the statistics show that it really helped in every way, now the trial is over and we’ll do nothing with that info” tests are really starting to feel like those Flat Earthers proving the earth is a globe with science and then ignoring their own findings videos
Individuals who received the $1,000/mo or $500/mo payments were more likely to find a stable, full-time job than before they received the basic income. Results showed 45% of participants secured housing, while $589,214 was saved in public service costs. "It's freedom. It's freedom from poverty..."
Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1,000 a month. A year later, nearly half of participants had housing.www.businessinsider.com Participants in Denver's basic income program received up to $1,000 a month. They became more housing secure and landed full-time jobs.

Wow, what a great analogy for UBI as a safety net! Reality is basic income creates labor flexibility, the ability for labor to move around in the economy. It makes labor more secure knowing there is a net when we’re walking the tightrope.
Believing the myth that Universal Basic Income will lead many of us to quit our jobs is like believing a safety net encourages high-wire performers to fall purposely. UBI doesn't take away the incentive to work; it's about providing a foundation from which we can all aim higher.

Mom put her kid in the car after a day at the zoo. Then the doors wouldn’t open because the battery died. Sealing the 20-month-old inside in the middle of a national Heat Dome in the Arizona desert. Because Teslas are fucking dumb death traps.

Denver Basic Income project $589,214 was saved in public service costs. I’m tired of “how do we afford UBI” We need more education about universal basic income’s net “final” cost after we subtract saving public service costs.
😁📢 Call to action, make a post about and include the words “universal basic income” 🙌🏻 Share how a #UBI would help you or others. ✊🏻

Watching the ads, I keep wondering why hotels haven't responded to the airbnb thing by building more multi-bedroom suites. There's clearly a market for them! There are a lot of people who want to stay together but not sleep together when they travel!

UPDATE: WE GOT HIM So last night, while sleeping thousands of miles away, I accidentally helped bring down a massive organized crime ring. And it all started with the master criminal genius who stole my Social Security Number from the movie theater I swept the floor of in high school... (thread)
Thanks to the movie theater I worked at in high school leaking all employee social security numbers (two decades after it was bulldozed and turned into a parking lot) someone in Atlanta just tried to buy a swimming pool on my dime.

My field is more than 60% women. Shark Week, marine biology's biggest stage, doesn't just feature more men than women... it features more guys named Mike than women. And that's ignoring the pseudoscientific nonsense, wildlife harassment, and near complete lack of any real conservation content 🧪🦑
Beware of ‘Shark Week’: Scientists watched 202 episodes and found them filled with junk science, misinformation and white male ‘experts’ named Miketheconversation.com A study offers evidence that marine biology’s biggest stage is broken, and suggests ways to fix it.

Trying to figure out what the endpoint domino would be but for me it's definitely Browsing for new webcomics on a Top Webcomics ranking site in like 2002? 2003? ➡️ Literally all the major life events that happened thereafter
Not a complicated series of dominoes I guess, but weird to think that the idea for Night Vale, and thus making a living as a writer for over a decade, started with being invited to a Something Awful staff trip in Vegas, and not having enough money to fly there so I drove
