"Basic questions around what a borrower owes in principal and interest, and how long they must keep paying, are now mostly unanswerable. The rulings “may render the largest portfolio of consumer credit in the world uncollectible,” says Mike Pierce." 😱
If you actually read the two cases putting preliminary injunctions on pieces of Biden's income-driven repayment program, as I did, you find they are contradictory, inconsistent with 30 years of IDR in practice, and totally unworkable:
Student Loan Rulings Highlight Unaccountable Judicial Power—Againprospect.org Two judges this week invalidated part of a program that’s been in place for 30 years. The rulings contradict each other and seem unworkable in practice.

This is a good thread. I am not sure about describing this as a 'war', but I think that's mostly a terminological point.
This'll be a 🧵 in respinse. It's not that we're in a new cold war, it's that we're in a world war. Putin stated this in his 2007 Munich Security Conference speech. Which everyone took as just him being weird. 1/

We should do this for everyone. Also, this (from the project's founder): "What is fundamentally different about our approach is the way that we start from a place of trust." -- Compare to the suspicion shown by people who make people jump through hoops to get any benefits at all.
Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1,000 a month. Results showed that close to half of the participants secured housing, and nearly $600K saved in public service costs due to fewer ER visits & jail stays. They also saw improved mental health.

These competition destroying PE rollups ought to illegal. Like, why aren’t they? Market consolidation that leads to higher consumer prices is the accepted trigger for antitrust enforcement, so what gives?

Trump’s support and active participation in the mass slaughter of Yemeni citizens was so senseless, Congress passed a bipartisan bill (!!) to end it and he vetoed it! Look at how the New York Fucking Times covered this blood lust:

😱 I wonder what would happen if you asked the people who think they have shells how long women have to sit on them before they hatch, and how they get out given that babies do not have sharp bills.

This sentence (from the JAMA article, linked in the story) contains a whole universe of needless grief: "Congenital anomalies, which are the leading cause of infant death, also increased in Texas but not the rest of the US."
"Since Texas’ ban on abortion went into effect, infant deaths in the state increased by nearly 13%, according to a new analysis published on Monday in JAMA Pediatrics. In the rest of the country, infant mortality increased less than 2% over the same period."

“End crime, elect a felon” is a helluva slogan
It seems certain that Trump will try to make crime an issue in the debate, even though Biden has ended the Trump crime wave — homicides in 2024 will be far lower than 2020, and probably below 2019. But anyway, I was struck by this by Maria Bartiromo 1/

You can describe a lot of what's wrong with the U.S. right now by the idea that elites being held accountable for breaking the law is seen in elite circles as bad.

The fact that a second Trump administration is even a POSSIBILITY is such a tremendous failure on the part of every segment of our political elites. He could have been impeached, convicted, and permanently excluded on the very day. He could have been arrested the second he left office. Etc., etc.

This is why it's so important to understand the responsibility is not zero-sum. The fact that one person or group is responsible for something does not mean that you are not. In this case, Hamas is responsible for Oct. 7, and for all its decisions since. And Israel is responsible for ITS decisions.
Blaming Hamas for Gazans’ Suffering, Many Israelis Feel Little Sympathywww.nytimes.com Despite being aware of the devastation in the enclave, many in Israel ask why they should show pity when Palestinians there showed none on Oct. 7.

But neither side (speaking now of their leadership, not individual people) seems willing to stop pointing fingers at the other and consider their own faults, let alone what they can do better, or what their responsibilities as decent human beings might be. There is no hope until they do.
