Remember, if the government can obtain a conviction against Bob Menendez for taking bribes and stuffing gold bars into his closet that he was given for working on behalf of a foreign government, there's nothing stopping them from indicting you for the same thing.

Not my book but my brother's, it is about how neoliberalism laid the foundation to force us to solve distributive conflict through finance. Plus it uses really interesting case studies like the Stockton bankruptcy to make the point. cup.columbia.edu/book/democra...

I CANNOT believe we didn't know this was here until the Finnish Defence Ministry tipped us off. The Estonian Maritime Museum has an INTERWAR VICKERS-ARMSTRONG SUBMARINE! To Dr Clarke's and my knowledge, this makes it the only surviving Brit-made period sub in the world youtube.com/shorts/cwNF5...

"we never used to have all these women in their 30s suddenly getting diagnosed with ADHD" listen, I wouldn't have even noticed I have ADHD if I lived in an era where my doctor could ask if I want to lose 5lbs and then hand me enough amphetamines to see the face of God

A few years ago, Jon Lovett floated a theory that media treats Democrats like protagonists - to be challenged, accounted, and forced to be behave in growth-oriented ways - while the GOP are treated like antagonists - immutable, expected to disrupt, thematic obstacles. Thinking about that a lot.
I don’t recall the NYT calling for Trump to step down after being convicted of 34 counts of fraud and being called by a judge at his civil trial a rapist in the common person sense

I mean, after Trump reinstates Schedule F, the executive agencies really *won't* have any special expertise to draw on, so the Roberts court is just planning ahead.

Do you need something to be mad at all the time? Want an excuse to bully people and start fights? Instead of taking this desire out on social media might I suggest an alternative: It's called your local city council meeting and we actually desperately need that energy there

Unemployment doubled after smoot-hawley was passed. McKinley tariff resulted in a landslide defeat for the republicans in the midterms and a democratic trifecta in 1892. Whichever dipshit intern wrote this down for him didn’t bother to read any further

THIS IS HUGE! For the FIRST time, an HIV PrEP drug candidate in the form of a twice-yearly subcutaneous injection has shown ZERO infections in a late-stage Phase III trial. Lenacapavir was 100% effective at preventing HIV in MORE THAN 2,000 participants. Let’s talk about that! 🧪🧵⬇️

There's a whole universe of right-wing mythology that migrants show up and, like "welfare queens" before them, are given a Cadillac and a house. The reality is that our economy requires them, and the effects of deporting them would be akin to simultaneous natural disasters all across the country.
I think my favorite flavor of Trump voter is the person who a) is very upset about high grocery prices and b) is fired up about Trump's plan to deport 50% of the nation's agricultural workforce.

The year is 2026. Ground beef costs $20 a pound. In this Ohio diner, patrons say Donald Trump is doing his to best to fight inflation. One patron complains he can't find any home nurses to watch his grandmother and his wife had to quit her job. Unemployment is 6%.

Every few years here in Texas, a young idealistic conservative puts forth a bill in the house to punish employers $100k each undocumented worker & landlords $25k per undocumented immigrant housed in their properties. The bill is then quietly strangled before it hits the floor and the rep primaried.

I'm sorry, but if you call yourself a "moderate" or "conservative" while also advocating for "major changes" or to "tear down the system," then you're not any of those things, you're just an angry reactionary dimwit who doesn't even know what words mean. www.nytimes.com/2024/05/13/u...

My overall thesis on Philip Roth:
He was such a bastard but then again so is much of humanity and he was very good at understanding why they/he are like that
