Every time this comes up in diversity classes I'm, like, hey do we wanna look at how white dudes do this shit also or are we pretending this is just a uniquely "them" thing
Incidentally, Mexico also had a black president a long time before the US did. And Vicente Guerrero abolished slavery while he was in office, also, incidentally, well before the US ended slavery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicente...
interesting how a bunch of US commentators kept warning that AMLO was going to remain in power & form a dictatorship; instead what happened was his successor was overwhelmingly elected and it was the US President who tried to remain in power & form a dictatorship (and is still trying to do so)
But I was told in a multicultural training course that machismo was a defining aspect of Mexican culture. You can't be saying that my multicultural training was dangerously generic generic and overly-generalized, can you? I don't know about that. (This has all been sarcastic)
Mexico elects the president through plurality of the popular vote
Hillary would have won in 2016 if we had that system
But of course even that is way too late
i don't know what you're talking about, i certainly can't think of any recent and in fact still active political movements that might suggest that the US has an extremely obvious glaring problems with machismo or anything
The US has a challenge with being accepted as "civilized" because primal mechanisms like unfounded fear and senseless anger/hate seems to be in vogue among a significant part of the population. Suggestions calling for more of the same "since the other side do it" are not helping.
The coverage of this has been making me go insane. Yes, there is a machismo culture in Mexico. But they're not like... aliens. Machismo is not their one defining feature!
Very true, but also slightly suspicious. In 2020, Mexico was having nationwide protests against gender violence. And suddenly, four years later, we have not one but two female candidates for the presidency. Mexico went from zero to 100 in four years?!
