THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

Luckily, when we hear the excuse "we were just following orders" there's nothing horrific that comes to mind.
Seems crazy! But just logical. If a President cannot commit a crime in the course of an official act, like giving an order to the military, how can you prosecute the person who follows the order? There’s a whole code of military conduct about “illegal orders.” All orders are legal now.

Kagan's response on this is perfect. I'm not sure Roberts would even disagree that this is his preferred modus operandi.
"The Court, for its part, has not deferred to an agency interpretation under Chevron since 2016." And that is supposed to reflect the incoherence of Chevron, as opposed to the fact that there was a major change to the Court's personnel in January 2016?

This is closer to a Brexit vote than a presidential election but what we'd be exiting from is democracy
In short: You should have tried to beat him in a primary. You didn't and couldn't for the same reasons demanding the ticket be blown up now is a bad idea. We only have bad ideas now. But disconnecting them from the stakes is just weaponized bad faith.

As @joshchafetz.bsky.social says, this is a massive election year gift to the Republican Party. Instead of the consequences of right-wing extremism being fully on display, the story will be a "muddled legal landscape" with the suggestion that federal law can save us from red state legislatures.

In sum: hospitalizations from COVID-19 are still a significant public health issue. Uptake of vaccines is very low among those who are hospitalized. Age is still the biggest risk factor for hospitalization among adults. Half of hospitalized kids have no comorbidities.

When future historians periodize US history, 2013 will mark the end of the US's first era of officially consensual multiracial democracy. After Shelby County v Holder began a period of acute struggle over democracy in the states and eventually at the federal level. The denouement remains to be seen
Eleven years ago, SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act in #ShelbyCounty, arguing that "things have changed" since the 1960s. Today, we know that things have changed since this ruling: namely, that the turnout gap exploded in formerly-covered places 1/n www.brennancenter.org/our-work/res...

I loathe the accuracy here.
the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on corruption is basically at a point where the only thing that counts as a bribe is someone handing a public official a giant bag of money with a dollar sign on it while saying “this is a bribe” out loud

the erasure of 20+ years of news stories here is yet another sign that future generations will have much richer knowledge of the 1930s than they will the GW Bush and Obama years. The wayback machine is carrying a lot of weight these days. If that goes, adios: variety.com/2024/digital...
