Hot take: I'm truly not interested in hand wringing over how much people will miss enjoying the books of men who have turned out to be abusers. I'm far more concerned about the missing art that women haven't been able to create/publish because they crossed paths with such men.

I am pleased to announce that Cloudy has a reprieve from euthanasia and will be with me for some (maybe months seems most probable? who knows with cats) time yet. What looked like terminal decline were some bad days and less (bit still more than is good) weight loss than I thought. SO HOORAY!

Just throwing this out there: if a institution can afford sex abuse insurance, they can afford to pay taxes

TIL that churches can buy "sex abuse coverage" and now believe that if a claim ever gets paid out, they should permanently lose their tax-exempt status* *they should all lose this status anyway, to be very clear

The entirety of the Americas was full of people before Europeans, whole and rich civilizations with cities and artwork and histories that settlers almost or in some cases completely succeeded in destroying. It’s too great a tragedy to put into words.

right wing think tanks are making thinly veiled threats of political violence, the Supreme Court has neutralized the regulatory power of broad swaths of government, and the fate of the executive branch depends on whether the 81 year old atop it can learn to breakdance or something. Happy July 4th

As well-meaning publishers try to navigate the coming storm of state laws against diversity, I hope they'll consider Timothy Snyder's Rule #1 (from his slim book ON TYRANNY).

It's hard to process. It will probably take a generation to overturn. Possibly much much longer, if ever. But there's no way around working to overturn this. We've just been given a massive new challenge we didn't have yesterday.
I really cannot emphasize how catastrophically bad the Court's ruling was. I do my best not to exaggerate about these kinds of things but I am still kind of in shock

I’ve seen a lot of “X won’t solve the problem, Y will” and with respect, nothing we individually can do will solve the problem, which is why the problem is not solved. The thing we can do is to solve problems together.

Remember who had did all of that agenda- and parameter-setting around terms like "activist judges" and "politicizing the courts?" They were telling you what they were going to do. When they accuse, they are always telling you what they are going to do.
