Remember how the "retail theft crime wave" disappeared as soon as companies had to do their annual reports? That's because it's illegal to lie to shareholders. AI is booming (if you're a pleb) but if you have money - Goldman Sachs will be honest with you instead web.archive.org/web/20240629...

Hey. The fragmentation of the social media landscape has been hard on indie #scicomm 🧪 projects So if you'd like to follow a podcast that's enthusiastic about #linguistics, could you check out @lingthusiasm.bsky.social? And if you think your followers might like to, could you give this a repost?

after 20+ years of pondering the concept of "make up sex" it dawns on me that I never got it because none of my long-term partners believed in making up after a fight. And now I have a new topic to ponder: whether this reflects worse on their maturity level or mine...?

Imagine that there was a time in this country's history when the president sent troops to Mississippi to uphold the Constitutional protections it offered everyone. The current guy will just express his disappointment and let it stand....

The rise to power in republican circles has always struck me less as a coalition and more of a coat-tail situation. Disparate groups latch onto the next rising star in the hopes they'll be adjacent enough to power in order to wield it one day. They will literally abase themselves to take their shot
when you vote for President you are voting for a coalition rather than a person. the right understands this very well, which is why evangelicals lined up behind Trump.

I guarantee you the conclusion centrists and Carville-esque liberals are going to take from the recent European elections is “OK well we tried but it’s time to throw the immigrants under the bus, there’s no other way to survive.” Some of them have already landed there and the rest are en route.
Someone who I didn't think was progressive but who I assumed was reasonable went full-on "if the right-wing takes over France it's because the ungrateful immigrants tried to destroy the country" and welp.

The last time people went to go protest a Supreme Court decision there was an immediate, bipartsan effort to use tax player dollars to put snipers on Samuel Alito's roof while our favorite pundits went "Brett Kavanaugh has a family :( :(. His daughter must be so scared :( :("

The death knell of democracy was the friends we made along the way
we're all overlooking the important question though, which is are the justices all still friends having fun, despite their disagreements

on the other hand, nobody has any excuse for complaining that Biden simply lacks the power to deliver on all his campaign promises now. Oh he has to work within the law? well guess what, sparky....

23 bottom surgeries a year and to put puberty blockers and hormones in perspective, the most recommended treatments beyond social transition, is only about ~1200 patients for puberty blockers a year out of ~50k kids seeking gender related care and less than 3000 patients receive hormones
I thought that surgery wasn’t typically recommended for minors, anyway? Isn’t this already the status quo even among providers of gender affirming care?

The part that bothers me the most are the "blue no matter who" people who deride reublicans for "voting against their best interests" but yet cajole any potential ally to support Biden - who has crossed at least one of their personal interests and likely will not stop if elected to a 2nd term
I feel like the main political divide on this website is between “Joe Biden is terrible and old and I hate him” and “Joe Biden is terrible and old and I will crawl over broken glass to vote for a rancid ham sandwich against Donald Trump” very few people are actually huge fans of the guy

What stage of a relationship is it when you find yourself fondly remembering your ex because at least you knew your ex would never resort to personal and hurtful attacks to win an argument?

Reminder that Aaron Swartz was facing 35 years in prison and financial devastation for trying to programmatically download and open the contents of JSTOR, which led to him taking his own life. But OpenAI is going to scrape all of academia and make billions by plagiarizing it.
New version of chatbot reaches level of function where it responds to all queries by making a little twisty-wrist gesture with pinched fingers and saying “But isn’t it more *complicated* than that?”

And it's all free and that's the part that just breaks people's minds and I love it. You ever just need a quiet place to work? Did you know you can check out a meeting room for yourself to practice giving a talk? With video? For free?! I love libraries, they can hook you UP.
The number of adults I sell on the public library, who had *no idea* of all the things they can get there! "But I don't have time to take the kids..." It's ok, they can check out ebooks & you don't even have to make time to return them! "Audiobooks are so expensive..." They loan those too!

Phones are such a great deal these days. For just $1000, all calls are scam and all search is AI.
The first rule of avoiding scam calls is to never answer unknown numbers, and even some known ones. Curious? Bored? Worried it’s an emergency? Wait the extra minute it takes for the call to go to voice mail, then decide if it’s legitimate.
Sick of scams? Stop answering your phone.www.washingtonpost.com Phone scams are still hugely popular — and they depend entirely on people curious enough to answer.
