To all the abled folks that use the phrase β€œwheelchair bound” this is a beautiful example of why we in the disability community do not use those words. Accessibility devices are tools of freedom!!!
just took my new wheelchair for a spin around the block w/ my dog (something i could never even dream of doing before) & i am tearing up at how much joy it brought me. it's incredible how just by having access to the right mobility aids, i already feel so much less depressed.

For Disability Pride Month, sharing 🧡 that explains how omitting race in alt-text causes people to assume "default" or [w* ]. "Writers of alt text hold power in shaping the experience and perception of screen-reader users."
Alt text without reference to race: β€œWoman walking ahead of crowd, with woman screaming behind her” Alt text with reference to race: β€œElizabeth Eckford, a Black woman, and one of the Little Rock Nine, walking ahead of a white crowd, with a white woman screaming behind her.” Big difference.
The case for describing race in alternative text attributesux.shopify.com How to describe race in alt text and why it’s important

In other news, Mooncakes is one of my very favorite graphic novels. See also β€œTidesong” and β€œThe Infinity Particle.” She is on my β€œwill read everything by her sight unseen” list.
honestly hate that every time there's an industry bad actor, lists of "works by marginalized authors to support instead" start circulating like it's a moral obligation to be done out of guilt, & it's crickets every other day of the year. my art is not to be taken in as a reactionary measure

I came to my 14 year old with a concern about social media. He literally took his glasses off, rubbed his temples, and asked: β€œwhat have the moms on the internet said now?” πŸ˜―πŸ«€πŸ˜†

Didn’t even need to click through to guess the author’s race an gender. Do you what you want, fucker. But too many people got savaged by dogs, blasted with fire hoses, and hung from trees to get me into the voting booth for me to everοΏΌ opt out.

Most *white* Americans. There is no country on earth that imprisons more of its population than the US. Prisoners disproportionately Black. The US leads the world in child executions. Not a typo. Disproportionately Black. Life expectancy for US Black folk lower than for Uighur Chinese. Not a typo
Pretty much. What it mostly boils down to is that most Americans really don’t have the faintest idea what living under modern authoritarian regimes actually looks like, and how it’s often at the same time way more boring and way more scary than they’d imagined.

A branch that gave itself a power not granted to it by the Constitution is using that power to amass more power and further weaken the democratically legitimate branches. We're being turned into a monarchy run by judges
This is big: The Supreme Court has overruled the "Chevron" doctrine, which gave administrative agencies leeway to interpret ambiguous laws. This will decrease agencies' regulatory power and give a lot more power to courts. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23p...

This is a real holiday I checked And if you don't celebrate it by making a bad comic a fairy baby sheds a diamond tear and dies
Did you know that tomorrow, June 24 2024 is national make a terrible comic day? You don’t have to make comics every hour or a multi-page story, you just have to string a few panels together. It’s mandatory especially if you haven’t drawn anything for yourself lately and you miss it

Reminder that Aaron Swartz was facing 35 years in prison and financial devastation for trying to programmatically download and open the contents of JSTOR, which led to him taking his own life. But OpenAI is going to scrape all of academia and make billions by plagiarizing it.
New version of chatbot reaches level of function where it responds to all queries by making a little twisty-wrist gesture with pinched fingers and saying β€œBut isn’t it more *complicated* than that?”

Consider not saying "art SHOULD" but "art CAN" and see all the different, new things that result. You might not like all of them. Probably won't. But that's ok, that's life. And art. Please learn to accept that not all art is made according to your prejudices. Thank you for listening.

Imagine being the cto of openai and saying out loud that producing low quality content means you shouldn't have a job and thinking that for some reason doesn't apply to your job working at the giant machine that produces vast amounts of overwhelmingly very low quality content company

Just finished Ann Leckie's TRANSLATION STATE and it's a freaking masterpiece. Also I loved the little shouts-out to Murderbot. Three of the best books I've read this year were women writing space opera. (The other two were Kate Elliott and Martha Wells)
